Making people and ideas findable

We have been completing the design process for Sandi Patty's new record label: Stylos Records.

I am looking for some feedback on the logo design.

Looking at her Web site, and the colors, graphics and aesthetics there, I'd definitely go with the first one.

I do like both, but I'd make an absolute decision if I knew the significance (if any) behind the designs. If there isn't a "meaning" behind the respective designs, I'd choose the first one.

The word Stylos can be referred to as column and they have had a bible verse they wanted to the logo to emulate.

Kyle,

It sounds like you have a strong grasp of what the client wants and you achieved it with second design. Personally, I like the first design the best, but I'm not the one paying for it. :) Good luck!

Kyle,

The red and black logo has the appearance of a stronger color contrast. The black somewhat uneven crescent shape at the bottom implies a spinning record/disc so it has more meaning to me. The name Stylos subconsciously reminds me of grain silos, so the red vertical shapes reinforce that for me.

There has been a lot of talk about logos and the "fade/transparency" effect used on them these days. (i just listened to an hour and a half of it in a conference) A lot of people think it should mainly used on web/screen and not print. I think both are good designs, but I think they might need some tweeking on the spine. Is there a rule the design part of the logo needs to be on the spine.

Reply to This

No it is not necessarily a rule. We could just go with the font treatment for the spine. Are you suggesting to do away with the transparency?

Exhibit A, Kyle. Have fun.

ohh don't misunderstand my comment as "a rule"--the only rule is there are no rules to design--just good taste hehe. I am of the design mindset that the more simplified the better. That said(so you understand my simple comment)--even brand swag (first thing that is very apparent without having to post examples) is a simple design. It's effective. I think the first logo in black is just as effective as the ones with the transparency.

I agree with the transparency issue. I appreciate all the feedback on the logo. I do not come from a design background... I have been fortunate enough to learn from some great people. It was a hobby that turned into an obsession. :-)

Any feedback is awesome!

one other thing to consider with logo design...you might want to make all of them 1"X1" and see if they print well. "Records" in the logo seems a bit light and a very effective logo will print just as well small as it will large.
