Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

We have been completing the design process for Sandi Patty's new record label: Stylos Records.

I am looking for some feedback on the logo design.

Will your customer ever want this logo embroidered? If so, there are some things to think about such as size of the font and shading. As far as the size of the font goes, small fonts are very hard to make look good with embroidery. You are trying to put a lot of stitches in a little space so they do not always look crisp and readable. The RECORDS is pushing the 'too small' limit of embroidery. Shading is also very hard to accomplish with embroidery so the first option would probably go to a full column. If I was basing the choice on embroidery only, I would go with the first one - vertical without the shading.

I like the design, it reminds me of Art Deco; the first design would be my choice.

I like the first one, because it reminds me more of the equalizer lights that bounce, plus they help complete the circle. It also reminded me a bit of headphones and even a smile. The 2nd one reminds me less of music than an art deco style of architecture. I would expect that to be an architect's logo, not a music labels.

I second all of Erik's comments. I especially like the smile reference.

I like the first one...I think its cleaner and easier to read

I like the second one - it is a clear winner to me. 1. less is more. 2. As a record label owner I think of what is going to be memorable even when it is a small stamp on the spine, or a favicon on a web address, or with or without color. Island Records for example has a logo that no matter how small it is, you think Island records. All of the above speak the message, but to me, I'm not missing it with the second. Congrats.

thanks for your thoughts Daniel. I was hoping you would chime in as a music industry professional. :-)

I think it's clean, but I'm feeling like it lacks a memorable identity. I think I'd forget both of them after a few minutes.

Thanks for the comment Nellie. I think the name of the label stands out a lot easier than the visual identity of the logo. In my opinion, it is more important for the name of a record label to me the memorable piece of the puzzle. Of course... The goal is to have the entire package be memorable as a working unit but there isn't going to be many times when the symbol is going to be seperate from the word : Stylos. With that said, any suggestions or thoughts on why the symbol is not memorable? What do you think makes a symbol or logo memorable?
