Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I feel like the video player might be heading the wrong direction, but I'm not sure. I could use some input from the community...please take look at the recent posts and give your commentary here.

I'm not saying any of these videos is "bad", I'm just wondering if I should "moderate" them or not. Sitting in the "reviewers" chair can be tough. Do we need some rules for video content, theme, purpose? Should folks be required to post background in order to spark dialogue around video? (I feel we should always do this whenever we post new content be it video, blog, forum, group or whatever).

My perspective:

When I first launched Smaller Indiana, my vision was to bring the most creative and innovative (and artistic) souls from our state together and give them a platform on which they could post their creations, thoughts, opinions and questions....so that we can connect around our gifts.

So far I'm very pleased with the way folks have used words to describe their passions - regardess if these passions are artistic, humorous, business oriented or not-for-profit. I've had to do a little pruning of content when it gets too promotional. I don't blame folks for trying to use this community for business networking, but I don't want to see business networkers eclipse the SOUL intended purpose of this community.

But when it comes to video...I'd hate to see this place become a dumping ground for YouTube videos. Just because we can upload videos to this site doesn't mean we should upload everything. But of all the videos we could post, which ones SHOULD we post?

My hope is that Smoosiers would use video for a more enlightened purpose. We are each gifted in special ways. Our gifts are made to be shared. Gifts appreciate (in value) the more they are appreicated (by others). We need to need each other. That's what this place if for...to share the things we've been given and build community. If we isolate, our gifts will never be fully realized nor utilized...and we're more likely to feel discontent, dissatisfied and cynical.

Pat, based on the first few videos posted, I have basically ignored them. As I remember, my first video views were reruns from YouTube and not personal to the people on this site. I had no interest.

I looked at the latest four that have posted now. The first is a blatant marketing advertisement. The second was kind of cool regarding the apple vs pc war. I think it is appropriate. The next couple were probably aimed at advertising a business, but since it is video (artistic) it may fit.

I think the real issue boils down to how much B2B are we allowing on this site. Two thoughts:

1. There is no allowing or not allowing. It is a free country and participation will dictate what is acceptable and not. I knolw that as much as I first thought this would be a networking site for my business, I now tend to go completely other directions. I used LInkedIn for business. On Smaller Indiana I am looking for other outside interests, i.e. spanish, fishing, Marian College.

2. Defining B2B can be hard. If this site's SOUL is about creative, innovative, and artistic that is inherently a business deal for some people, while not for others. An artist promoting his work is both artistic and business networking. An IT guy disucssing Twitter or some other new technology is also networking for him. Me selling insurance is not artistic and I would have a tough time convincing most that I am creative and innovative in my applications.

In summary, don't censor too much. Let the group (which is still very young) self select for a while.

The very name of the site "Smaller Indiana" is inspired by network theory. Small World Aristocratic Networks to be precise. We are each of us more closely connected to eachother than we realize. We all maintain various "small worlds" in our lives: family, work friends, college friends, church friends, friends of friends...and innovation / opportunity often happens when ideas and relationships jump from one small world to another. I don't with to make this site about art or business. It's about both as both are part of an integrated whole - which is our lives.

Kevin,

I think talking about insurance is totally appropriate here. My dad sold insurance and I know he had a way of making it compelling an interesting......(well, not all the time...but that didn't stop him : )

Just sharing what you know and what you've seen and what you've learned. You see a lot of things in your line of work. Insurance is something we all need but, most don't know much about. It's also a changing and creative field, I think.

I don't come here to be sold anything but am interested in all the different people here, what they know....that I don't.

Pat with regard to video, I think you are correct, this is a good place to set some standards. A good first step is to challenge people to think about the site and the group before they upload. First, nothing that might be offensive. Second, how does this video deserve to be on the main page? How does it fit with the goals for the community?

We can always loosen up later but, it will be hard to go back once the community has a history and a habit of sharing any amusing video...............and posting it here (like some people forward every email that they get).

That said, I think it's important for people in the community to question one another. Yes, you had the original vision but now it's in everyones' hands. From time to time we may need to question one another (and be questioned ourselves).

Personally, I posted a couple of videos to my profile page because they are about what I do. If someone wants to know more about me and what I do, my profile is the place for that. Wouldn't have been appropriate to put them in general video.

Personally, I think this site could use an event/calendar module more than it needs video.

I like the idea of a one paragraph description ( ok, maybe one or two sentences ) on what the video is about.

If it is posted by someone i follow regularly Doug Karr, Kyle, Pat, I will usually give it a shot, if not, i look for some type description. IWithout that, I rarely bother.

recently looked at one that was a leak in someone's ceiling. I have to admit i didn't watch much more then that.

Can we suggest people follow same guideliens with video as written posts - no blatent advertising?

I enjoy the videos that are made by people on Smaller Indiana (the one about Don Schindler being the only Dell user at MediaSauce is a great example). They let me see what fellow Smoosiers are thinking about and doing -- I treat it like a blog entry or discussion forum. But I tend to ignore the YouTube reposts because I just don't have the time to watch them.

Well, the cream will rise to the top I guess. Trying moderate like mad will probably drive one insane. Perhaps their should be rules and even moderators for things like videos if it's non-efficient or simply a waste of bandwidth. People will ultimately vote by either watching a full video or by clicking to something else if they don't like it.

One of the empowerments of the web is that you never have to stay anywhere too long - yet there is so darn much content online - how are we ever going to be able to 'bookmark' all the goodies we want to watch and use?

Personally I would like to see videos covering events that the local news media is too busy to cover. Interviews with local chefs, artists, etc. would also be great. I enjoyed creating the Flanner House and the Indiana Humanities Council/Mindtrust Videos (collaborated with Bryan Wyrick).
