Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

We have taken everything into account on the logo questions we have asked in the past. Thank you to the entire community for giving us your opinions on our logo designs. We do take everything in account and use them.

We have another one for you.
Olympia Stone is a high end counter-top manufacturer in north Indianapolis. Here are two logos we are struggling over (the fonts). We have other ideas for the brand but this is my personal favorite. I wanted to get the Smaller INdiana take.

I like the second one. It seems more old-school, which is what the pillar (and the idea of Olympia/Mount Olympus) would represent.

I'm thinking of a bank or old commercial building that would have used the Romanesque type font on the front, as well as the Iconic style of pillar. The two just go together.

I would even consider changing "stone" to the same font.

Kyle:

Neither of these designs is entirely satisfactory.

If you visit their website they stress two facts:
1. CNC cutting is much more accurate and cost effective than traditional hand labor.
2. Natual stone is much better than its man made alternatives.

If they are that committed to CNC technology then they don't want to stress only a traditional ( read stodgy and more costly) heritage. Some sort of sytlized blend that more forcefully suggests a wedding ot old and new would seem to be more harmonious with their business philospy. Also I suspect they need a tagline to help send their corporate message.

Out of the past a beautiful future or something similar.

I have been thinking about that Dick. Thanks for the thoughts. Something a little more upbeat and edgy..

I am a fan of the top image, the vertical line agreements between the L and the I really work for me, it also seems that the letters O and A work well standing alone, as book-ends to the column. The only challenge I see is when looking at the letter series that falls within the column, I see a bit of an 'eye test' from the doctors office. Mainly with the M and O in the middle, these elements may just need a little more horizontal space between the two words to avoid a letter mash-up. this may also allow the word STONE to be the base of the column, reinforcing the strength and solidity of the brand name.

These are my thoughts, I hope they support the work.

Peace!

Use a very old font that can be carved. The Y and P would be difficult in the second. The first is boring. Go back and look at some old carved marble/stone work for some inspiration. Also, the column is a very, very common logotype and does not really excite.

I prefer the top one. The font in the bottom makes it look a bit too busy. If the logo was embroidered, I think that the top one would be easier to read.

As to the serif/sans discussion, do you want to be modern or traditional? If you go traditional, then try putting some serifs on the ionic column, making it corinthian, or something to take away from the minimalism.

I kept trying to find words in the column (i.e- "inni"), so I think the hierarchy might need be changed. What about the type on top? Maybe there is some way to make the column smaller without decreasing the stroke size.
