Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

You too can be considered a spammer on Smaller Indiana! Let's talk about the great ways available to annoy, frustrate and alienate the SI community.

The easiest way is to cross post messages. Got an event coming up that might apply to people who are interested in Nature, Cooking and Blackberry Users? Then post the exact same message in every group! People following those groups will receive the same message, so your branding is consistent. People who are in multiple groups that you post to will receive the same message over and over again, reinforcing your point!

Something to avoid is Smaller Indiana's "classifieds" section. Yes, one forum category option is: "Classifieds - Blatant Self Promotion." Sure, you can post your message there. But really, you should post it everywhere else. After all, the best place to blatantly self promote yourself is anywhere except where blatant self promotion is encouraged, right?

Finally, don't forget about Smaller Indiana's policies. You know how the site reads: "We want to know the real you...Please do NOT use your Smaller Indiana blog for blatant self promotion?" That's great advice, but you can ignore it if you think your message is especially important. Or, if your name is Eunice James.

So don't forget: you too can help ruin the community by reposting messages all over the place! Thanks for helping to make Smaller Indiana a place that no one wants to visit.

Agreed Agreed Agreed Agreed!!!! I think most people on SI want to know who you are before they want to know what you do!!

Can I blatantly promote others? What if I wanted to extol the benefits of a local company dedicated to improving business processes?

I wonder if I could pay Eunice to promote me since I'm too lazy to self-promote?

The reason that motivates people to do so, is to get others to see their advertisement and they think posting in one place would not get the full exposure they want. But I agree Robby, when people repeatedly post messages in every place they see it, it gets annoying.

My question, would people who copy and paste the same message and add "Personal welcome" to new member's wall be classified under this "SI spammer" category?

Ashan, I am not sure that "welcome messages" are probably spam. It meets the definition of "unsolicited" and "bulk", but such messages are not "commercial."

@Bill: Thanks for the plug. I owe you a beer.

Help

A few things to consider before joining Smaller Indiana:
1. Please use your real name (first and last) when you sign up, or we cannot open your account

2. Please do not use logos or commercial images for your profile photo

3. Events should be posted in the events calendar

4. You can post pretty much anything you want on your own personal page (self promotion, etc), and you can change the style of your personal profile page to reflect your corporate identification if you so choose.

5. Please keep all comments civil and polite. It's OK to feel strongly about a subject, and it's OK to be critical of ideas, but please refrain from personal attacks of any kind.

If you witness or experience any issues, please contact admin@smallerindiana.com and we will look into the matter.

6. "Blatant self-promotion" is discouraged on SI, and "spam" is not welcome. Please be considerate of your fellow members.

Smaller Indiana is supported by its members, and by corporate sponsors. If you're interested in learning more about sponsorship, please call Pat Coyle at 317 332 7878.
