Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I'll be part of Governor Daniels' delegation to China and Japan in early September. The purpose for my trip on behalf of Indy Partnership is to begin building relationships with Chinese business and government leaders who can help us identify Chinese businesses that are thinking about investing in the U.S. -- all with the goal of bringing that investment to the Indianapolis region. We'll be in Shanghai and Hangzhou for a few days each. I'm talking to lots of different folks about existing contacts in both cities, but wanted to see if any Smoosiers had any relationships there that we should know about . Thoughts? Thanks.

I know a bunch of contacts at Delphi's China Technical Center in Shanghai. Also, I'm an Indiana based Chinese translator/interpreter. My website is www.championlanguage.com.

Di: this is very helpful; could you contact me off line (rgifford@indypartnership.com) to talk more specifically about Delphi? Thanks. Ron

Hi Ron,
Depending on how much time you have before you leave, I would suggest joining some strategic groups on www.linkedin.com There are groups of CEO's and overseas Company executives in China and Asia that you can join and connect with in the discussion groups. I may suggest calling Cummins Engine in Columbus as they have many divisions in China and many contacts in the automotive industry there.

Good Luck,
Dave

LinkedIn is a great idea. I'll follow up on that. Cummins and Eli Lilly have both been involved in setting up meetings for the entire delegation, so we've been working with them already.

Hi Ron-

Long time no talk! I am partners with a private equity firm in Shanghai that is very well connected at the highest levels of Chinese government and business. I'll be meeting with them next week in CA and can ask if they'd be interested in helping. Also, a contact of mine in Shanghai was formerly representing the state of Idaho in China and recently became disappointed when Idaho's new administration failed to follow up on some of the impressive leads he was generating on Idaho's behalf. He would be a good friend for Indiana there--in fact I mentioned the idea to him, half joking, last time I was in Shanghai. But I think it might be an option worth considering. He brought significant business to Idaho. Give me a ring and we can discuss more: 317-670-7450. Or send me an email: eparker at srscapital.us.

Hello Ron,

At least four of our faculty members at the IU Kelley School of Business just returned within the last two weeks from educationa trips to China. You should contact Marjorie Lyles, mlyles@iupui.edu; Roger Schmenner, rschmenn@iupui.edu; Mohan Tatikonda, tatikond@iupui.edu; or Barbara Flynn, bbflynn@iupui.edu. These are faculty members who are among the top in the field and have extensive experience in Chinese business.

Thanks. Dave

Dave: Thanks for the note; I met Marjorie and Barbara at the US-China conference that IU hosted this spring. I'll give Barbara a call. I'm working with Patrick O'Meara and Shawn Reynolds in the Office of International Affairs on some contacts for this trip, plus the entire delegation will have a reception with the Hoosier Club of Shanghai (university alumni).

Much appreciated -
Ron

Ron,

Myself and some of my team have made a number of recent trips to China for a client that we have there. I am President and founder of RPM Technologies here in Indianapolis. We provide IT Compliance and Technical services to pharmaceutical research and other life science companies. I'd be happy to help.

It will be a few more weeks before I arrive in Kokomo so I won't offically be a smoosier until then, but I have recently been given the opportunity to establish business relations with NetDragon in China. We collaborated over the course of a week to bring one of my Android apps to their market. It is good seeing others doing the same, because I enjoyed the experience and have learned a lot. They will be expanding beyond the gaming industry into R&D much like myself so it was a lucky shot they contacted me out of the blue. Good luck to you all on your trip.

I just now happened across this thread, so I hope it's not too late. I can put the group in touch with the head of the business school at Peking University or the leadership of the Harvard Club of Beijing.

Close to the Peking University campus (also known as Beida) and Haidan Bridge is the Zhongguancun business and technology district. This district features many of China's bustling tech ventures. Between Beida and Tsinghua Universities, the delegation can visit another emerging tech sector with companies such as Google.
