Do real life heroes exist anymore?

Probably the only real superhero I've ever met was my Dad. Despite fighting the devastating (understatement) effects of multiple sclerosis, he's been able to: practice medicine, raise four kids, run a college health center for 18 years (Ball State), run for public office twice, and be highly involved in all his kid's lives. He never complains about his situation - even when it's a big deal (going from manual to electric wheelchair, temporary loss of vision, etc...), and has this outlook that you can only live a day at a time.

He has been an incredible influence on me, and everyone that has taken the time to get to know him.

Mike, Your father is a Real Hero!
I don't need to look far, I see heros within my family. None of them are famous for being brave and doing the right thing, but they are still heros - everyday heros.

I'm extremely biased in my answer here, but firefighters. No doubt in my mind the men and women who do this job are heroes.

On Feb 12th 2008 I was fighting my second house fire in less than 8 hours and as everything had settled down and we were in overhaul mode, the roof collapsed and I caught 99% of the force.

Long story short, my C4-C5 slammed together throwing my disc into my spinal cord. I ended up in emergency surgery within hours and have nerve damage forever. But I'm walking.

If not for the professional abilities and care these men and women took in digging me out and "packaging" me properly, I might not be walking or even breathing.

If you want to honor a hero or point an adolescent in the right direction, I'd nominate those in the fire, police, EMS and medical services.

Firefighters, police officers, military personnel and other emergency service personnel aren't just heroes, they are professional heroes. Anyone might have the opportunity to save lives in the right time and place---but these men and women actually sign up to put themselves in harms way for the chance to save lives.

That makes them heroes in my book.

I signed up for this volunteer stuff nearly 20 years ago and get paid a whopping $500/year for it. Now how crazy is that!? ;o )
