Making people and ideas findable

In a 2003 study, funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes for Health the authors concluded that conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neuroses rooted in "fear and aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity". The authors noted that " the intolerance of ambiguity can lead people to cling to the familiar, to arrive at premature conclusions and impose simplistic cliches and sterotypes."
President Bush was indentified as a textbook illustraion for the neurosis because of his preference for moral certainty and his dislike of nuance.

Do these attributes describe conservatism? Or is this an unfair characterization?

If Jesus walks out of the tomb and sees his shadow, do we still have 6 more weeks of bad weather?
Joe:
Because the ideas you believe in are so damned important and because being right is often so very lonely I am grabbing you by the scruff of the neck so that I can say to you.

STOP IT.
Stop sitting on the sidelines, carefully choosing your spots.

Put away your switchblade. You can't kill dead people.

Don't just counterpunch, organize your thoughts and present a theme for all of us to consider.

In other words, put your ego aside, roll up your sleeves, and get about the hard, slow. painful business of changing minds.
Hey, Dick, could you provide a link to the NSF study? I'd like to read it more fully before positing a response. It's a great question you posed (given how some in the GOP are asserting those on the left are "socialists," "Marxists," or "Communists" without fully defining terms having a full and frank discussion here is clearly important).

Best,
Lalita
Interesting, I never realized Barack Obama was a conservative until now:

1. He painted a clear picture of fear to pass a stimulus package.
2. He's aggressively increased our troop levels in Afghanistan and approved missile usage.
3. Is dogmatic in his approach to economics, using unproven massive spending methods that have failed in Japan or Europe. Did I mention he's a Christian?
4. Is intolerant to gay marriage and gays in the military - extending "don't ask, don't tell" policies.

As for premature conclusions and simplistic cliches, how about the fact that we're to believe that a government that hasn't been able to fix the tax code, balance a budget, provide veterans benefits, fix social security, etc. for the last century is going to be the government that fixes everything through a 10 trillion dollar debt and universal health care.

Thanks for the clarification!
Doug
PS: Before you label me, I'm an independent that donated to Obama's campaign.
Actually the debt is $11,169,466,380,008.32 Trillion with $61-$101 Trillion in projected outlays for medicare, medicaid and social security in their present form.
