"Our friends call us the 'shack." Really?

RadioShack Corporation (NYSE: RSH) will unveil its new brand creative platform, "THE SHACK," on August 6, supported by an integrated television, print and digital media schedule, as well as a high-profile, three-day launch event taking place in New York City and San Francisco.

What is Radio Shack thinking?

"Trust is a critical attribute of any successful retailer, and the reality is that most people trust friends, not corporations. When a brand becomes a friend, it often gets a nickname - take FedEx or Coke, for example. Our customers, associates and even the investor community have long referred to RadioShack as 'THE SHACK,' so we decided to embrace that fact and share it with the world," said Lee Applbaum, RadioShack's Chief Marketing Officer. "

The Shack gets social

To bring the new creative strategy to life, RadioShack will host Netogether, a three-day event taking place in New York City's Times Square and San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza on August 6, 7 and 8. The event will connect the cities with two, massive, 17-foot laptop computers with webcams that allow live video and audio exchanges.

The move is a good one for the sake of longevity. But a better move would be to provide the public with information on what's happening on the shelves of The Shack. Personally, I did not find anything exciting about this little broadcast of theirs. I've been around for a minute and will pop into RadioShack for audio cables or a quick soldering kit but it has been many moons since I've stepped foot into one. I have no idea how they've changed over the years. Cell phones are a dime a dozen an there are just so many people that do it 'better'. As far as computers at RadioShack, while it might make sense, I just would not make it my first stop.

So in a computer age a name like RadioShack really dates you. Make the change but cut the theatrics. It was horrible. They could have spent that money on a better executed ad campaign or street team for that matter.

I thought of the book...NOT radio shack. I agree with most of the comments here that it is a lame attempt. They should change their merchandising and leave the name alone...

A couple times a year, I find myself in a Radio Shack looking (in vain, usually) for some obscure battery or electronic component. Sadly, what used to be the source for nearly anything electronic has now become a soulless peddler of cell phone plans and laptops, staffed by clueless young people who wouldn't know a capacitor from a mosfet.
Better trained, knowledgeable staff, a wide selection of quality product, and a corporate attitude that places customer satisfaction first, would be far more relevant that adopting a stupid nickname.

I watched for maybe 3 minutes, and the first thing I heard was about an iPhone app for rating sexual performance... Seriously - there's a link to a blog post about it below (probably NSFW). Because that's what I want to think about when I think about electronics... Very unprofessional with "Radio Shack" quality audio and technology going on the whole time. I'm sorry, but ouch, this is a huge blow to your brand Radio Shack.

RadioShack has been around for a few decades....and considering the hype the new 'brand' is getting....good way to 'hook' into another generation of listeners. I am sure they will be as discriminating regarding the quality of audio as some of the comments made here. Go for it!! Let's see how they impact the market....and move the economy!

I watched for 5 or 10 minutes this morning and was not impressed. For one, there was no sound from the guy on the left. He kept attempting to jump into the action, looking kinda upset/confused when the guy on the right would keep talking. The guy with sound was talking to a little kid about little kid stuff. I didn't see how it related to Radio Shack at all.

I turned it off right after the guy on the left got his sound back - someone walked into the frame and turned the microphone on for him. It appears now that they cut out one of the feeds.

Overall I find it confusing more than anything. What's the point?

No. Radio Shack has been an epic fail for too long now. They had a market - the electronics do-it-yourselfers - and they let it fall by the wayside in the 90s in favor of selling bad cell phone plans to your grandma. Unless they adopt a Micro Center strategy and bring "real" electronics back into the equation, they will just continue to fail more.

Just watched. This is the most annoying video feed I have ever watched/listened to. If this were happening in Indy, I would be truly embarrassed.

What does Radio Shack sell anyhow? I haven't been to one since my dad bought a car-phone back in the early 90's. Just wondering.

Does the phrase; "forced use of technology" ring out here. The only challenge with social networking is that; we do because we can, not because it's the best form of communication.

First, content is king and much of this content is weak, small and is better produced with better reach in other sectors of both traditional and broadband media.

Finally, This delivery doesn't have an 'adaptive voice'. It doesn't sound or look like their intended audience. It sounds like old thinking, dreaming they're 'now'.

Maybe I'm not as enlightened as some, but I find it interesting that the over dramatizing of this name/brand change is actually accomplishing a goal, to get people thinking and talking about Radio Shack again. Sure it might be lame to make such a big deal about it, but have they not accomplished their goal of getting people to talk about them and think about them again? Here we are debating the merits of the name/brand change, their over-the-top, questionably-prepared publicity stunt, and guess what we're all going to think about the next time we drive by a RS store? But at least we're going to be thinking about them where as before we'd have just kept on going because that's what we're used to seeing.

Now as a consumer, I've always liked the Shack. So, to answer the main question, I see them as a friend because I can count on them to have the right selection, not everything plus the kitchen sink! It's hard to narrow down your options when there are 50, whereas instead you only have 5 or 6 to choose from and you know they're the best of the best. At least that's what i'm thinking of regarding the big electronics items like cameras and lcd tvs.
