Making people and ideas findable

I'm not sure what happened, but I upgraded from IE 7 to IE 8 yesterday, and since that point, or at least I think that was the point, my computer has been messed up. When I try to open my Outlook I get a couple of error messages.

Here's one:
cannot open the outlook window. the set of folders cannot be opened. the file c:\users\nicki\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst is not a personal folders file.

Another one that I get is that there is an add-on that is not compatible with Outlook and it asks me if I want to uninstall it. I say yes, and it still doesn't work right.

Has anyone else installed IE 8 and experienced any quirks with their computer?

(btw, I'm operating in safe mode now. :( )

Almost everyone. Does Outlook work OK in SafeMode? If not it sounds like you need to do a repair on your PST file - you can do this by following the directions here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010563001033.aspx

One of the issues I have with IE is the amount of influence that IE has over your entire system - it is not JUST a program - it is integral to the working of Windows and parts of it are used in almost every MS program. When it has issues so does Windows and all other MS applications.

Good luck.

I know that I've had these issues, but I also installed the release candidate on Vista. On XP it was working just fine. I need to uninstall the RC and install the actual release.

Do you have an old RC version?

Yeah don't install the release candidate. Not on a production machine. Especially with something like IE.

No offense, but you guys just reminded me how much I love my Mac!

Do the right thing. Dump IE. Get Firefox.

Hey guys,

I'm still in safe mode. :( Outlook repair tool has been run, IE 8 update has been removed, we've done a system restore, I've uninstalled Firefox for the time being thinking that maybe there was an add-on that may have caused something, and I am now seriously looking at Mac's. Thank you for all your help and cross your fingers that I find a solution soon!

@Adam-I don't typically use IE, but we were working on a new site for a client, and I had to check it in both browsers. I was using IE7 and my partner was using IE8. He didn't see the issues that the client and I did, so that was the reason for the browser upgrade. I wish I hadn't done it-especially because I highly dislike IE. Oh well, lesson learned. :(

@Mark-Outlook doesn't open at all. I am temporarily using Windows Mail. The message that I posted in the original post is what I get when I try to open in both safe mode and normal. Any other suggestions?

I usually use Firefox as well, but owning a web design firm we have the same issue - we HAVE to use IE at times - ick. As for your Outlook issue my guess is you'll have to create a new set of PST files and then do what it says here to import your outlook info into it:

Of course Microsoft's site isn't loading properly right now, but I'm pretty sure this is the right article.

UPDATE: I can use my computer now!

It took me backing everything up and doing an entire PR Restore.

Thank you all for your help!
