Making people and ideas findable

It's time for the seasonal pledge drive for our local NPR/PBS station. Your commute is interrupted by impassioned pleas for help, compelling arguments for your support, and the voices of volunteers and celebrities.

Sure, public broadcasting needs money. But is this the right way to raise it? Does the awareness caused by the annoyance help more than it hurts?

What do you think?

I understand the need to raise money for WFYI. I listen the the station every day... but... it is getting extremely annoying.

I completely concur! It's to the point to where I end up changing the station or switching to my iPod before I make it to work because I get tired of the pledge tactics.

I had the idea this morning that, after I've been effectively persuaded to make my contribution, you could tune in to a secret WFYI/NPR station that is broadcasting withOUT the pledge drive stuff. Someone please make this happen.

Come on! 1 week out of what a years worth of programming to raise money. It is better than some dude yelling into my ear every 20 minutes about a push, pull or drag car commercial :-) or the latest male enhancement pill (seems to be prevalent only on right wing radio for some reason).

I usually pledge right before pledge week....but i understand the need....what I don't understand is the need to mess with regularly scheduled programming. I pledge because I like what I here and/or see.....when it is changed I wounder who they are trying to impress....because it just irritates the hell out of me. rant over.

You know if everyone did their bit on day one and WFYI reached its $250K goal they would shut up and return to regularly scheduled programming. When I was living in Lexington we had the luxury of two public radio stations WEKU and WUKY, i just switched channels when the other had a pledge drive :-)

I have always wanted to be rich enough to see if i donated all that they were asking for on the first hour if they really would quit.

Have you seen this clip from The Simpsons?

Ah the Simpsons. I have come to the conclusion that to be true to myself and the NPR way i would have to ask for 10 callers to call in with donations of $5.01 before my donation would be effective.
