Making people and ideas findable
The $130K Question
What would you do? What if you were along that road you found it? I have pondered this question to myself and have thought of some various things while making my decision.
- Finding $130k wrapped up like it was, the most obvisious answer was that it was drug money. If it was just a wallet or a bag full of money say around $10k, then my moral judgement would be to turn it in. But $130k, alongside of a major highway, the internal debtate begins.
- Finding the money with three people instead of by yourself makes the decision much harder. Will they turn on you if you decided to keep it?
- The money could be counterfeit. Of course this could be tested by taking several of the $100 bills to a store to get them marked to see if they are or are not real.
- Does the economy benefit from you taking it or the government siezing it? Obvisiously, if you spend the money in forms of charity or consumption, you benefit private business or someones life. The government would just use it for some expanded project that will in all reality would not benefit society.

I agree that the money would do more good in the hands of a citizen when economic stimulus is considered. I know it sounds silly, but it’s the Girl Scout in me that would end up turning the money in. The money could be evidence which would be important in the prosecution of criminal activity.

I'm guessing it was more than reported...You said $130K...I heard $100K....either way...it was more than reported and I'm guessing there is a VISA payment being made the next few months that will take care of somebody's debt!

Honestly I would want to keep it but turn it in assuming the bills' serial numbers were tagged or the bad guys could some how trace the numbers. I wish I could say turn it in because it is the right thing to do but that's a lot of $$.

If the government cant' find a rightful owner, then let the citizen pay taxes on in and keep it. It's not like money grows on the king's trees (or inside his tires).
Why does the government need to keep the money if it's not theirs to begin with?

Isn't there a finder's keepers law that allows the finders to keep the money if no one claims it within a certain period? If so, I think the workers ought to be entitled to split the money after the designated waiting period.

No, not since the federal government siezed it through its office out of Chicago. I believe the department was tied into past debts or something like that.
