Making people and ideas findable

Nila Nealy

Will you help me raise 2,000 books in 2 weeks for Indy youths?

I rather suddenly decided to do something to give back to my community. I want to provide books to children in Indianapolis summer day camps to celebrate National Summer Learning Day. The whole story is on an impromptu site I set up at nilanealy.squarespace.com. Here's an excerpt:
The Summer Youth Program Fund and MCCOY (Marion County Commission on Youth) are collaborating to celebrate National Summer Learning Day in Indianapolis on July 9, 2009. The day marks the culmination of The Big Summer Read, a multi-week program to engage Indianapolis children in reading of all kinds. As part of the celebration, participating summer camps will each receive 100 books to distribute to children.

There are plenty of studies and anecdotal evidence that learning slips over the summer when children don't read. Summer reading isn't just a program; it's an important part of learning for children of all ages. And each of us in the Indianapolis area can play a role, first by encouraging our own children to read and also by making it easy for other children to love books by owning books of their very own. And that's where you come in. Please join me in raising books to help children celebrate National Summer Learning Day in Indianapolis.

I'll take books that are:
- New or gently used
- Fiction or nonfiction
- Appropriate for children 6-16

If you think you can help by donating a book or two or two hundred, please contact me. Visit nilanealy.squarespace.com for more information. I'll be at the Bigger Ideas conference next week and would be more than happy to take books then. Thanks!

I know the Fishers library has a used book section, and last time I looked, I thought they had tons of books for under $1. I'll look at my bookshelves, but for those who don't, a $5 purchase would give a lot of reading material.

Have you tried calling Borders , B&N, half Price and so on? Maybe they have "extras".

I haven't yet, though that's on my list. Thanks for the nudge!

Nila, I have several books that fit the age range. Tell me when and where I can drop the books off to you (I can't make Bigger Ideas due to work conflicts). Great, great idea!

Thanks Lisa! I have a flexible schedule this week. I'm doing a lot of working from coffee shops. Is there a window that works better than another? Feel free to email or call.
