Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

What was your favorite speaker and why? What is something new that you learned, or an idea that was reinforced? What do you wish had been included but wasn't? What do YOU think Bigger Ideas should include?

My favorite speaker was Jennie DeVoe. She spoke from the heart about how her passion has become her business. Jennie was also very humble and often times commented about her confusion as to why she was included as a speaker. Very genuine and for me inspiring.

I'll be honest that SIBI is still sinking in. We left for vacation the day after, so I haven't had much time to reflect. Once I do, I'll be sure to share more comments.

That's funny, I had the same reaction. I actually emailed her to tell her so. All the speakers were great, but I too felt she was the most genuine and most transparent - two qualities I greatly admire and strive for myself. She was inspiring because she was humble and made it real. She made success attainable to anyone willing to follow their dream and face their fears.

I emailed her too. I also took time to listen to her music on her website and am considering attending her CD release on 7/17.

I know, that would be fun! It's my kids' bday that night though, so I probably won't be able to make it. Should be a great time though, her music is awesome! :)

Okay, other thoughts on other speakers or other things learned?

There was a great posting by Kallie Bonell at http://indyhub.org/article.aspx?ItemID=222 which includes this recap:

Below is the best take-away from each presentation – IMO.

Dr. Scott Massey – President, Meridian Institute
Where does Indiana rank? Basically at the bottom for secondary degrees, venture capital, and outgoing news picked up by the AP. What does this mean? We are undereducated, underfunded and unknown. To become a player we must work to fix these three things.

Jennie Devoe – Song Writer and Performing Artist
Take time to envision where you want to be, then break yourself out of the box and go get it. Do NOT wait for someone else to encourage you, even if you’re the only person who sees and believes in your goal.

Mark Hill – Managing Partner, Collina Ventures
Self awareness equals success. So, figure out what you can do to make something better; then, do what you say you will do. Accountability of results is key in a technology driven market.

Dr. Sally Brown – Founder and President, Ambassadors for Children
Passion and perseverance. Ask yourself four things. 1. What can you do, 2. should you do, 3. will you do, 4. and, how will you inspire others? Dr. Brown also shared this quote from Helen Keller – quite appropriate – “Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

David Forsell – President, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful
There’s not time for wasting time. Instead it is time to make your world better in anyway you can.

Ken Johnson – Champlain, Indianapolis Colts/Hope Dealer
If you are the smartest person in your circle, your circle is too small. Also, do not let anyone shape you. Determine who you are, yourself.

All around, the conference was a great success, with a high turnout of interesting and diverse attendees and speakers delivering varied inspirational talks.

I thought this was a superb, very accurate recap. Your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree? What else do you think was missing or should have been addressed that we could discuss here and/or incorporate in the next conference?

Hi all, I agree: Jennie was the best part of the conference for me, too. I'm going through a career and life transition, so her remarks about reinventing oneself really hit home. I'm definitely going to be at her CD release party, so I hope to see you guys there!
