GermanFest at the "A"

First Annual Original and Fabulous GermanFest

Saturday, October 10, 2009
Noon – 8 p.m.

FREE family festival at The Athenæum, along the bustling Massachusetts Avenue corridor near downtown Indianapolis

"Meet me at the A!”

The “A” brings the first annual Original and Fabulous GermanFest to the capital city. A free, day-long family indoor/outdoor festival with booths and activities celebrating all things German, including:

- MUSIC – Stomp your feet to live performances all day long by an array of German entertainers, capped off by Indy Polkamotion, a Central Indiana favorite, performing live on stage 4-7 p.m. Some of Indy’s most popular performing arts organizations will also provide a sampling of their talent.

- CONTESTS
- Enter the First Annual Indy-Yodel Contest judged by a team of high Bavarian mountain climbers.
- Cheer on your favorite contestant in the Wiener Dog Race featuring dachshunds racing down New Jersey Street, complete with a starting "gate" and a finish line.

- DISPLAYS – Feast your eyes on a magnificent display of German-made automobiles, both late model and vintage . . . Mercedes Benz, Porsche, and more!

- FOOD – GermanFest wouldn’t be complete without Bratwurst. But get ready also for giant hot pretzels, German pastries, and more!

- BEVERAGES – Those who want to wash down their brats with something cold and frothy will find refreshment in the Beer Tent and Biergarten. For others there will be ample soft drinks and other non-alcoholic beverages to keep the whistle wet.

- FOR THE KIDS – The YMCA will host a special area with pint-sized contests and activities.

- AND WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN . . .

The evening of October 10 brings the GermanFest Benefit, a ticketed event featuring Cabaret-style seating at tables of four, a silent auction beginning at 8 p.m. with “wunderbar” prizes such as a trip for two to Germany, and a concert at 9 p.m. featuring top Beatles tribute band “1964” performing some of the Beatles’ most memorable tunes. Tickets to the benefit are $125 each, $500 per table. Ticket information available at events@AthenaeumFoundation.com.

The Original and Fabulous GermanFest is hosted by The Athenæum Foundation Inc. with support from the Federation of German Societies, Indiana German Heritage Society, German American Klub, Indianapolis Liederkranz, Indianapolis Männerchor, Indianapolis Sängerchor and the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, Indianapolis

ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE ATHENÆUM FOUNDATION FOR THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF THIS HISTORIC COMMUNITY TREASURE

Hey, Heather, been in Germany (really!) so not caught up on the GermanFest group on Smaller Indiana. If you see this in time, just bring your little wiener dog to the Athenaeum sometime before 1:30 tomorrow to get him/her registered. As long as your little dog looks like a hot dog, he/she'll be welcomed with open arms! Hope you can make it!

Billie and Kevin, please see Heather's comment. Do you know anything about it?

How do you enter your dachshund for the race? Also, can half dachshunds participate or just purebred?

As a member of a family with long and major ties to the Athenaeum, or Das Deutsche Haus as it as named in the lithograph we own, I am thrilled to see such a culturally appropriate event and I look forward to it's smashing success!

The Liederkranz will be a highlight of the afternoon - check out their website for all their performances, which always include tasty food and beer: http://www.indyliederkranz.org/

The food, music and libations will all be "wunderbar", I'm sure. I'm personally looking forward to the dachshund race. I'm going to bring my grandkids with me. They'll love the dogs, and I know the GermanFest will have kids activities as well as some Porsche cars on display. What more can a 9 and 10 year old boy ask for than to look at sporty cars up close and personal?!
