Greetings and salutations!
My name is Travis Neal and I am an Indiana artist. I work in many different media, but I joined SMALLERINDIANA for my MURAL work. I've done a few walls around town and I love it. Never felt the need to meet any other artists in my younger days- pretty much kept to myself. Now that I'm older and wiser, I've come to realize that we can all benefit from interaction with other artists...I even hope to mentor a young artist someday.

Hi Everyone! I've been away for a bit because...I opened up a shop in Arcadia, Indiana! The shop is called the Arcadia Soap Shoppe. I will be teaching sodium hydroxide free (safe) projects, such as candlemaking, making your own lotion, your own laundry soap, your own perfume/linen sprays, bath bombs and so much more! Classes are offered on a drop in basis! Just come up on and learn something new! You can reach me at lillian@fragrantblossom.com if you are interested, or go to www.indianasoapcompany.com to read more. Also, my neighbor shop to my left is Tabbytreeweaver.com! Linda teaches people the art of weaving on these professional old fashioned looms and the work she makes and what her students make is absolutely beautiful! Come on up and spend a Saturday in Arcadia! This is part of the Arcadia Arts Initiative, slowly growing. New crafters needed! Open up a store front and teach something! If you are accepted by the initiative it's a great place to work! I have to pinch myself because I can't believe I have this beautiful shop. I make handmade soap (mainstay for me in business) and I get to sell it in this shop. With 2 girls in college, doing this art form has been truly a blessing!

I am a self-taught artist working mainly in oils. I have been interested in all things crafty my entire life, but after reaching the "empty nest" stage of my life, I have found more time to devote to developing those skills. I was glad to find this group of creative souls and hoping that more discover and join,

Posting #2 My Own Projects

One reason that I began the Folk School is because I'm a very undisciplined craftsman. I love the process and research that goes into mastery a new discipline. As soon as I've developed some proficiency in one I become interested in another. All of these are revisited evey few years and the cyclke continues.

At the Folk School it is my role to explore many disciplines and by developing programing and teaching I can justify my scattered approach (and keeping all of the equipment and materials associated with each).

Over the holiday break (I'm an elementary teacher by day) I set aside some time to explore Pennsylvania German (or Dutch) whimsical bird carvings. The German immigrants to SE Pennsylvania developed colorful little birds that are used to decorate furniture and hang on walls. The pinnacle of this art form are table top tress filled with flocks of colorful birds.

In my research I also discovered Charles Hart of Massachusetts. Charles was a decoy carver. When Admiral Byrd explored Antarctica in the late 20s he developed a gentle obsession with carving penguins. He carved many of these from 2 inches tall up to 36 inches tall and sold them to tourists. Today these birds bring over $100,000.

I'm going to try to post photos here. I failed at an attempt earlier this morning.

Comments and and questions are always encouraged.

Posting #1 The Folk School

Blue Stone Folk School, Noblesville, exists to teach and promote traditional arts and artists. We've just begun our third year and are struggling, like any grass roots not-for-profit.

Our programing includes monthly concerts featuring traditional (folk - in a loose sense) musicians, letterpress printings, bookarts, papermaking, ukulele building and playing, woodworking and carving. Other programs will be added as interest develops and we get our feet on the ground.

You can view our (outdated) website at http;//www.bluestonefolkschool.org

Contact me with any level of interest.

I will try any art or craft that I can get my hands on! I love anything artistic or crafty and I'm always looking for cool new ideas. I enjoy a lot of the "traditional" fine arts, such as painting or drawing, but I am always more than eager to try something new and different. Arts and crafts are my hobby, but I have done work for pay previously. I definitely wouldn't turn down a paying job if someone made a request! Why not make money off your hobby? :)

I'm always a "fish out of water" with most of my friends. Have a very creative side but have never channeled in one direction. Bounce from (all self-taught) painting, welding, sewing, crafting, etc. etc. Not a master of anything! Always looking for someone to share my enthusiasm and quest for something new. Anxious to hear from you!

I looked all throughout the diverse groups...and could not find a painting group...I do both 3-D character development and painting...but mostly painting...the 3-D character thing might be a fad...but I am pretty obsessed with it at the moment...so who knows...
