Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Hey Everyone! Hope you are well! I need some help. I have started my website and love it, but it is a lot of work...anyway...

I am needing some shots of the city for the website, so I need some images, help, and/or advice. I don't want to seem cheap, but could I trade a few shots for posting credit on my site or posting the url of the photographer's website? Or should I be paying them?

Feel free to email me as well.

Thanks!
john

I am no professional, but I would immediately assume it would depend on the photographer. You get a newer photographer, and you could get away with giving him/her recognition along with the photos. In this case, you may be gambling on the quality of photos.

On the other hand, there are some excellent photographer's in this group who will definitely discuss price with you. Please do not quote me on anything. Take all of this strictly as advice from another.

I would quote you a price, but I am one of those newbies myself. The recognition would suit me just fine for now.

Also, check out the group's comments. There are some excellent photos of the city throughout. Maybe you can directly address a few photographers. I have found everyone fairly simple to speak with so far. Just say hello to get started.

Just my thoughts. Good luck.

John - the right thing to do in my opinion is to pay whatever you think the photo is worth to you. There are many that just scrape Flickr and use photos without permission even when it is explicitly stated that the photo is copyrighted. A link back would be great but do realize that there is equipment involved and it does cost the photographer money.

Thanks Phillip and PK. I would like to be paid for my work as well, so I had thought the same. We will see. I appreciate you both taking the time to respond. j

John - if you are interested you are more than welcome to use my Indy Skyline panoramas on your website. In fact I think those are the only images I have available under creative commons. Here is the link to that set:

PK your stuff of the city is great love seeing it again. I thought anything posted on Flickr was under creative commons or am I mistaken? I dont post stuff on there for this purpose. Problem with just giving credit and a link is that it devalues "pros" or other people who would rather be paid. Phillip I understand your point as we are a newer outfit as well, but I wouldnt feel right using my/our image for free and possibly take work and money away from someone else who has already put in alot of work. I think a reasonable fee and a link would both be ok. Perhaps a smaller fee if a link back is included

Not necessarily Chris, you can set a default license but can change it on an image to image basis. But it doesn't stop folks from scrapping Flickr for images though.

Beautiful images PK. Thanks for sharing them.

I'm not singling you out John...I just need to vent...

Professional photographers earn their living taking pictures. Would you ask your doctor, your mechanic, your lawyer (or any other professional) if it were okay if you just put a link on your website instead of paying them? Probably not. While photographers' services require much investment in skills, equipment etc., many folks seem to think we (photographers) should be grateful to have "free advertising." Sorry, but free advertising doesn't pay my bills. Unless you're planning to do the photography for your website yourself, you should include any images you wish to use in the budget for your web design.

With the unfortunate invention of iStockPhotos.com, Fotalia.com, etc. (sites which have pretty much bottomed out prices on stock photography), stock imagery for websites is now available on even the bleakest of budgets. You could succumb to that, or you can offer a local photographer a good sum for professionally shot images.

Absolutely agree Amy. Well said.

John,
I read through the previous comments, some I agree with, some I don't (I barter a lot of items for services), but I never saw a discussion around a theme. What is the purpose of your website, and what type of images are you looking for? I'm an amateur photographer, and I love shooting images for the pure joy of it. I don't have any images of the city per se, but if you can tell me what you are envisioning I'd be happy to keep my eyes open, I always have my camera with me. Is there anything you need help with on your website?
