My daughter and I traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia a few years ago with the orchestra. We noticed racial animosity between the Chinese - Japanese - Koreans. It surprised us. I suppose that shows our naivete. I love Japanese art. It is so line driven.

henry, sounds like quite an adventure at a young age...have you seen the movie Empire Under the Sun..one of my favs.....my sister was in phillipines for few months...i know there are still some dangerous remote areas..i just saw recent kidnappings in Philippines of several intl development workers..

welcome david and marita...glad to see you will try to make it to the festival this summer...with 20 below weather it can not get here fast enough! :)
i spent few weeks in Tokyo on couple occasions ...took one year
of Japanese language just to help get around a bit and understand
the culture a little bit better...i lived in Central Asia & i plan to travel to China next...

As a Kid I used to spend the summers with my Mom in Fusa Japan, and then later spend time with her in Manila. I never got to go to the province in the Philippines where my mom is from to meet my grandfather. Unfortunately, there were many communist guerillas at the time and they would have kidnapped me for being an American. It's not as if I could have blended, I kind of stood out down there when I was a kid and now I am a 6 ft 4 in tall Filipino! :)

I'm with you, Marita. I haven't been there yet either, but I love the food as well. I do hope to get there sometime in the next couple of years. My partner goes fairly regularly to Japan and Singapore on business, and she's been to South Korea and Hong Kong as well.

I missed the event last year, but definitely plan to be at the next. I have not yet traveled to Asia, but I love the food. My Chinese/American and JapaneseAmerican clients have been super to work with. The arts, history and culture are intoxicating.

I attended the First Annual Asian Festival Asian American Alliance, Inc. (AAAI) this past summer where I spoke with Mayor Ballard who was instrumental in getting it off the ground...
