Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

If you have never been to Fringe, you are in for a treat. The following are my suggestions on ways to get the most from the experinece, but I would love to here what other folks do or like best about the event.

Lorraine's Fringe Tips:.

Check out the schedule:
Read reviews and descriptions
Plan on attending several shows, with time in between to enjoy the activity on Mass Ave
Go with Friends, and then split up, watch different shows and compare notes.
Build in time for a few drinks at some of Mass Ave's best locations.
Hold on to your button, and come back several times!
Post mini reviews on Smaller Indiana

Great post and comprehensive list, Lorraine. Not much to add, but here are a couple thoughts:

As you're leaving or entering a show, if someone hands you a postcard-sized advert for another show, take it -- you never know what you might find. If you don't want it, recycle it or give it to another Fringe-goer.

I completely agree with Lorraine's suggestion to post mini-reviews here on Smaller Indiana -- the best Fringe shows I've attended have been on the recommendation of someone else who has already seen the show. Let us know when you see something cool! Word of mouth rules at Fringe.

And make the commitment to challenge yourself at least once. Fringe shows are affordable enough to choose one or two that, from the description in the program, make you think, "Huh?" But, again, Fringe is full of surprises and you might find an unexpected gem. Then, go and tell all your friends about it and add a review on SI!

As part of the IndyFringe team I can tell you that this year you will want to add to your list make time to stop at the outdoor tent at the corner of Mass and College outside the historic fireman station.

We will have a new outdoor stage with live music, magic and the occasional Fringe performer hitting the stage. Plus there will be beer, wine and food sold at it. Should defiantly provide a great spot to meet people and enjoy the festival atmosphere between shows.

I also would add to your list- Meet the performers! They are everywhere. In the bars, sitting next to you during the show, on the street. Especially the out of towners. They are great people, and from my experience once you meet them their show quickly moves to the top of your must see list. The interaction with performers is definitely an added bonus to the Fringe festival you don't get with most theatre.
