Nonprofit Leadership and Operations - Q&A

Much of the great work in our community is done through formal or informal nonprofits and associations. If you have expertise to share or questions to ask... let's build a library of experience and knowledge.

Welcome to Nonprofit Q&A

This group is intended as a complement to Annie's 'Advocates for Indiana Nonprofits' group. I see her discussions focused more on issues and ideas relevant to the nonprofit community while this discussion will be more on topics of implementation and leading/running a nonprofit.

Please add your posts in addition to responding to what I initiate. I will occasionally add one of the FAQ that I get regularly so that the group can bring some real wisdom - things like "How do I start a nonprofit?" or "What is a fair salary for an executive director of a small nonprofit?" or "What can we do at a board retreat to get our board excited and engaged?"

And please view this as an extension of the FREE weekly Not-for-Profit eNews. We have recently passed 7000 subscribers. You can subscribe at www.NotforProfitNews.com

I am wondering how some of you get committed volunteers for your organization.

Tiffany, Carol, it's good to see you here. Here in Whiting we're gearing up for a community museum. Capital funding will likely come from a TIF district; we're still deciding on the approach to operating funding.

I just finished an annual giving database project with the Elmhurst Historical Foundation, which is similar in scope to what we might do in Whiting. Elmhurst is one of Chicago's Western suburbs.

It looks like we have a lot in common.

Greetings, All -- I am glad to find a few places to become more involved in Smaller Indiana. I serve nonprofits in two capacities; as the sole staff for the Association of Indiana Museums; and as a freelance grant writer for area nonprofit organizations, specializing but not solely with cultural nonprofit organizations. My background is an MA in museum administration, and I've worked in or with museums for 20 years. Museum networking is also available at indianamuseumpeople.ning.com. Thanks --- Tiffany

Hi there. I am new to this group and would like to introduce myself. I spent the last 12 years working for non-profits (Indianapolis Zoo, Riley Children's Foundation and Methodist Health Foundation) "behind-the-scenes." In April I launched Data Sense, LLC which focuses on training, consulting and implementation in development services -- prospect research, prospect management, database usage and management, tracking and reporting. I am looking forward to participating in conversations posted by the group.

Giving Sum Grants process has begun for 2009! Could your non profit use $50,000 plus 100 passionate volunteers, voices, and passion? The new online system is at www.givingsum.org . Deadline for applications is July 17th. Please shoot me a message with any questions. There is a FAQ and guidelines on the web site.

Greetings all! I am new to the group and would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I am a technology management professional by trade (mostly IT PM stuff,) but currently between jobs. I have been a member of Lions for more than a decade and have held several leadership roles within the organization including club President, several zone and region posts, and am currently a Trustee for the Lions for the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired state project. My club is the Washington Township Lions Club (www.washingtontownshiplions.org)

Another group to network with...

The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN - The Indianapolis Chapter) promotes an efficient, viable, and inclusive nonprofit sector that supports the growth, learning, and development of young professionals. We engage and support future nonprofit and community leaders through professional development, networking and social opportunities designed for young people involved in the nonprofit community.
Membership is FREE! (we just want to network...)

Greetings everyone. Just wanted to extend an invitation to anyone that may benefit from our company. I represent Business Service Solutions and we support Risographs (duplicators) among other things. We work with many area churches regarding their high volume printing.

If your organization is outsourcing your print needs or using a traditional copier for high volume prints (75 copies+) we can likely save you a great deal of money. Any questions feel free to contact me anytime.

Best Regards,

Justin Stanley

I've created a Smaller Indiana group for nonprofit marketing & communications. This group was formed as the online presence for an informal group that meets every other month. The online forum will give us a place to discuss challenges, seek advice and learn about meetings and trainings available to help you fulfill your mission.

Anyone who is responsible or involved in communications and marketing for an Indiana nonprofit is welcome to join both the online group and our bi-monthly meetings. Our next meeting is tomorrow (sorry for the short notice). The topic is market research on a shoe-string budget. This may be useful for anyone who is looking for ways to expand reach and impact through more effective communication with their constituents. Learn more or join the group.

Help

A few things to consider before joining Smaller Indiana:
1. Please use your real name (first and last) when you sign up, or we cannot open your account

2. Please do not use logos or commercial images for your profile photo

3. Events should be posted in the events calendar

4. You can post pretty much anything you want on your own personal page (self promotion, etc), and you can change the style of your personal profile page to reflect your corporate identification if you so choose.

5. Please keep all comments civil and polite. It's OK to feel strongly about a subject, and it's OK to be critical of ideas, but please refrain from personal attacks of any kind.

If you witness or experience any issues, please contact admin@smallerindiana.com and we will look into the matter.

6. "Blatant self-promotion" is discouraged on SI, and "spam" is not welcome. Please be considerate of your fellow members.

Smaller Indiana is supported by its members, and by corporate sponsors. If you're interested in learning more about sponsorship, please call Pat Coyle at 317 332 7878.
