Greetings fellow Boilers!

Just an update on what I'm doing with OUR Smaller Indiana group: I have contacted the Purdue Office of Engagement to "engage" them in this effort. Tom Carroll, Director of the Purdue Office of Engagement in Indianapolis, has joined the group, but give me a little time to bring Tom "up to speed" so that he can participate more actively.

In the meantime, feel free to share YOUR ideas. I've been a little quiet because school JUST started and my first classes are TODAY (Tuesday, January 8) so they deserve my attention right now!

Tornado blows Greensburg, Kansas, onto a green brick road

From his new home site, a grassy hillock on the west edge of the city he once governed as mayor, John Janssen, BS 71, can look out at the horizon and see the gold of a Kansas wheat field colliding magnificently with the cobalt blue of an endless summer sky.

Purdue research shows not all distillers' grains created equal

Although it all comes from corn used to make ethanol, not all dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS) are created equal. Nutrient content and availability of the grain product makes some batches of DDGS more suitable as feed for livestock species than others, said Scott Radcliffe, Purdue University Extension swine nutrition specialist.

Native birds might restock poultry industry's genetic stock

As concerns such as avian flu, animal welfare and consumer preferences impact the poultry industry, the reduced genetic diversity of commercial bird breeds increases their vulnerability and the industry's ability to adapt, according to a genetics expert.

Purdue University is marking Green Week with several events from September 15 to 19. Guest lectures are being organized by the Energy Center, Center for the Environment and the Purdue Climate Change Center. A town hall forum is also planned for September 19. Speakers include John Wall, who is a top executive at Cummins Inc. He is an expert in engine technology and the effects of diesel fuel on exhaust emissions. Hey, folks! I'm on the College of Liberal Arts Dean's Advisory Council and I wanted to let you know that Purdue is launching BoilerSpere, which will allow faculty, staff and students to get together on a platform similar to Smaller Indiana. More as things develop.
