Tremendous response to first-ever MAS Capstones presentations event; dubbed big success by faculty and students

Take one Media Arts and Science Program (MAS), stir in a dedicated faculty and staff, then season well with creative, energetic students and you had the recipe for a very successful inaugural Capstones Presentations event April 25th at the Informatics and Communication Technology Complex at IUPUI.

More than 40 MAS students filled computer labs and classrooms in the IT Building for demonstrations of, and conversations about their final design projects. Family, friends and others from the IUPUI community were treated to a phantasmagorical array of digital storytelling projects including video, audio, photographic, 2 and 3D animation, Web and interactive offerings.

“I was quite impressed with the quality of the work done by our students and with the organization of this event,” said Mathew Palakal, associate dean. “The enthusiasm and the excitement among the students, faculty and the staff who participated this event was amazing!”

The Capstone is the culmination of a student’s academic experience in Media Arts and Science and the opportunity to demonstrate competence in various aspects of digital storytelling. Equally important is the creation by students of a showcase piece of their work for portfolios, a necessary tool when hitting the job market.

“The MAS faculty is keenly aware of how hard our students work and prepare for the presentation of final projects,” said Prof. Tony Faiola, director, MAS Program. “That was a primary reason for adopting the new display format to give students a much wider audience with which to share their work.”

Plans are underway for a similar event next year.
