Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I moved to Indiana in 1992 from Dallas, Texas, and have never regreted our decision to relocate except for one thing. For the past 16 years I have been on a Quest for Good Mexican Food. My criteria is simple: would it survive in Dallas. Most of the places I have visited would not. La Margarita would barely get by - and it's one of our favorites. Acapulco Joe's wouldn't make it (apologies to those who love to hear Ethel Merman sing "God Bless America" at noon). I haven't been to the recently reopened El Sol so I can't comment on it. Please help me and everyone else and share your favorite places. (PS - think twice about mentioning a chain. Remember that this is Smaller Food Indiana, after all.)

I've never much cared for El Sol in the past, but I tried it for lunch yesterday. (It recently re-opened.) The food was terrific. Great guacamole. Tacos were fairly Tex-Mexy, but flavorful. Definitely worth a shot.

I second the nod to La Piedad in Broad Ripple. Ate there last night and it was great. Two minor drawbacks -- no margaritas (had to settle for a Corona) and the refried beans were cold. But it seemed like they were supposed to be that way.

I think La Piedad has some of the best grilled Tex Mex food.. Love the flavors, and the location is hard to beat.

Love both La Piedad and El Sol (went there with Nicki Laycoax, Lynn Jenkins, Faith Wesstrom, and Kevin Hill for Cinco de Mayo day).

I would also encourage to try something new -- Macchu Piccu (did I spell that right?) on the west side, on 38th. It's a Peruvian restaurant, and they have some of the best chicken I've ever, EVER had.

I still have to get to the re-opened El Sol. I've heard of Macchu Piccu and it's on my list of want to visit someday. We ate at a Mexican seafood place at 79th & Michigan Road the other night. Unfortunately, I forget the name but it translates to Red Snapper. It had a good write up in the paper but we were less than impressed. It was a dinner of contrasts. I had red snapper Vera Cruzano. The large piece of fish was very good. But the suace was not very good - too much tomato sauce, too salty and not enough of the onions and peppers which make it Vera Cruzano. The interior was very nice verging on elegant - considering this is in a strip center that's a pretty good trick. But service was abysmal. Almost as if the wait staff didn't want to be there or were afraid of the customer. Almost depressing. Their credit card machine was broken and at the end of the meal they said they couldn't take cc's. When I said I didn't have enough cash they finally agreed to take a check after disappearing for 10 minutes. Thanks to all of the great suggestions posted here, I don't think I need to go back to see if this was an anomaly.

The seafood place at 79th and Michigan Rd is called Huachinago, which does mean Red Snapper. I ate there when it opened with my husband, who is Mexican, and we were disappointed too. My birthday is coming up, and I'll ask him to take me to one of the places you guys have mentioned.
Since this is Smaller Food Indiana, I'll add that we make a lot of Mexican food at home. If you would like to try a simple recipe, fry or bake a filet of fish and top it with fresh salsa: tomato, onion, cilantro, your favorite hot pepper, salt, and lime. You can also substitute garlic for the lime and cook the salsa. It's great both ways.

Happy Birthday and let us know where you went. I've cooked chicken with salsa but not fish - no particular reason other than I didn't think about it. Sounds like a good idea. thanks!

I haven't been to a few of the places mentioned in the post, but we love La Piedad. I'm surprised that they only have one location, but maybe they know their limits. Wouldn't it be nice if others did too?? Ha!

L P is one of our favorites. It was written up in the paper last week. The writer liked the food but not the feeling of being rushed. Those of us who know the place usually go a bit later and have a more relaxed meal.

For authentic carnitas tacos I love La Favorita at 71st and Michigan. The best I have outside Mexico! Crispy and juicy. Hole in the wall, but clean-awesome.
I know Adobo is a chain, but I enjoy the upscale Mexican occasionally (their margarita alone is reason enough for a visit)
