My journey thru Information Technology
I loved programming.
In 1984, I came to the United States on a 6 month contract. After several extensions, I decided this was where I wanted to stay, and I settled here.
The 90's were an interesting time. Downsizing became the trend and many shops cut back their staffs. I managed to survive several rounds. It was hard seeing my friends and colleagues being let go.
The romance was starting to wane for the profession. Lower rates and salaries, longer hours, less fulfilling work.
I had spent much time and money on my technical education but just couldn't seem to make the transition from mainframe to client / server or web.
Just after Y2K, I was let go and used most of my severance while looking for another position. The market was saturated with great people and jobs were not that easily found.
When I watched my wife leave a life-draining corporate career to start her own home business, I realized my path no longer remained in the corporate world.
Life After IT is a group dedicated to those who want to explore other avenues outside of the Information Technology profession.
