Making people and ideas findable

It has been my experience that social media marketing is most effective when it is comming from people that make up the the social online communties. Guys like myself ignore banner ads and flashing posts , as well as click here to win marketing
from companies and corporations 90% of the time . Some who think that corporations are better at social media marketing than actual people who make reccomendations to their networks, need to rethink-strategy.

I worked at IBM from 1991-2001 during the silicon valley start-ups and
have seen everything from concept to launch . When I became a consutant for online sites blackplanet.com and migente.com I quickly learned how social marketing worked because they existed before myspace.com and had 20 million members combined.

So my persective is different from the folks that think social networking started with Myspace.com

what has been some of your experience?

I think in it's best form social marketing is just a business term and extension for what we do naturally as human beings. We network. We do it in small groups, large groups and as a society. It is also where and how most information and opinions are brought to bare. Businesses large and small obviously need to understand that people on average are smarter than your basic ad presence. Dialogue is a much better way to engage consumers and gain greater attention, respect and appreciation for companies their products and the overall brand(s). Social marketing will play a much bigger role in the future of successfull businesses as people look to have stronger relationships with companies and the people that drive them. We are at a tipping point where the cash and trash mentality is quickly giving way to a cleaner, greener and healthier society. People will want better quality products that last longer and are safer for both personal consumption and the environmental footprint they leave behind. Social marketing will play a much bigger role in the ongoing debate about what products and companies are best. People will continue to have greater access in sharing information and promoting the "best of" in this world via what should be considered high-tech word of mouth. Still the oldest and often best way to drive successful products and businesses. The big question is what is the best way to position a business successfully within the dialogue of information that will lead to greater recognition ie; word of mouth / social networking / social marketing? I agree it is not banner ads or electronic bells and whistles.

Help

A few things to consider before joining Smaller Indiana:

1. We want to know your real name...Please use your real name (first and last) when registrering, or we cannot open your account

2. We want to know the real you...Please do NOT use your Smaller Indiana blog for blatant self promotion

3. We want to see your smiling face...Please do not use logos or commercial images for your profile photo

4. Events should be posted in the events calendar, not inside blog posts

5. Please do NOT post commercial video (demo reels), or Corporate Website promotions in your blog

6. You can post pretty much anything you want on your own personal page (self promotion, etc), and you can change the style of your personal profile page to reflect your corporate identification if you so choose.
