Bravo Shari!

Old school marketing is back again. The sift from the impersonal, no face corporate style maketing is what people a shifting from. Chris referred to "building relationships, understanding how and what our customers feel, and their needs". This is the lost art of marketing. It is not just about numbers and sales. We have built some wonderful relationships with our coffee clients by taking the time to know who they are and what they like. Social Media Marketing to me means: enjoying a friendly connection with individuals as an instrument of marketing. This instrument has given us the opportunity to meet some great people that we hope to have a long relationship with. So I like this new descriptive name: Social Media Marketing.

Social media can be used for a variety of business functions. It can be used for customer service, product development, HR, internal communications and probably a lot more. My sense is that this group is for people that are in marketing broadly speaking and are interested in learning more/discussing/debating about this strategy within the overall marketing mix, and of course all the nuances of the use of this strategy for marketing. Thats my visceral response.

When do we stop using the word "marketing" all together? This term is used to describe an effort to influence the perspectives of others (a "demographic") mostly through conducting promotional activities that impact many people at the same time ("mass media")

Social media is the opposite. Individuals have the power, not media buyers. So the question is not when do we stop using the phrase "social media marketing", but how much longer does traditional, one-to-many marketing have any effect?

Social media has enabled me to reach beyond local areas to connect with realtors and other business people and actually transact business around the country. Building relationships is what business is all about in today's environment, and the social media sights enable just that.

Isn't that more a shift in how we market...building relationships, understanding how, what our customers feel, presenting content centered around their needs, etc. more so than a totally new marketing discipline?

But Chris, because there is a personel aspect, and often involes discusion before any sale is made. it is not just marketing

So I have a question. When do we stop calling it Social Media Marketing and just call it Marketing?...IMO social media is part of the marketing tool box - an ever growing part, but still just a part. Thoughts, opinions?

Shari's comments are warm to the heart of all marketing folks and endearing.

I am pretty new to the idea of social networking. SmallerIndiana has been a very good experience for me and my company. We have had many new contacts we would not have gotten before. I have been in marketing for a number of years, but in the world of print and snailmail. The response is very different.Midwest Coffee Company is in Marion and we have been able to get the word out over here in the old fashioned way, word of mouth. We are custom roasters of 100% chemical free coffees, grown and processed. More details are on our site. We are now partnering with several others that we have met on SmallerIndiana. We write a Fresh Coffee Blog and let members of our groups know when we post, the response has been great, in 45 days we have had over 1050 view.
We would love to have an opportunity to share a cup of coffee with you. We do public and private Coffee tastings. They are fun, relaxing and educational. Can we interest you in a taste of freshly roasted coffee?
