That's because it includes the word "media." It's difficult to seperate "media" from "market"; partially because the McLuhan quote is so pervasive, but mostly because "media" has traditionally been an expensive, broadcast-driven activity.

"Social media" is really a terrible term, since it implies marketing, and therefore manipulation of the market. Really, this entire phenomenon is just a dramatic increase in the efficiency of authentic interactions. That's it. However, the degree of leverage provided by the Internet information technology cannot be understated. We're are doing what we've always done---being real people---but that action is rapidly eclipsing the manufactured reality of mass media.

So why have we decided that social media is marketing? Why can't it be social media public relations? Because building relationships is at the core of social media, isn't it? Questions to think about. Your thoughts?

Hey there, I just joined this group because I'm fascinated by social media marketing. Even an "old" woman likde me knows the value of learing how to market this way. So, I'm here to learn and soak up as much info as possibel.
