feel free to contact me at a.archibald@sbcglobal.net There are some primary sources of funding for youth work and urban farming relates to all of them. Again, I think that nutrition/obesity/exercise is a cluster of issues that would be the starting…

A shift to non-profit status actually seems like a good fit for many farmers - especially if the particular farmer wants to make a living by serving the public good. This would be good for farmers who are mostly a generous group to emphasize their s…

You have been tagged with the Seven Things meme. This is all really quite silly, but entertaining none the less. http://www.smallerindiana.com/group/7thingsaboutme

hey Alan, sorry it took so long to get back to you. We haven't had wheat in the store for awhile, not sure why. But even when we did have it, I think it came from Montana. There is a new farm I think around Carthage that is starting to grow small grains, we have their flax seed in our store. It is called Fields of Agape, their number is 765-914-0944. I hope all is well!

Alan - that's quite alright. It's prudent to monitor your behavior on social networking sites as it can suck you into a time warp! To simply answer your question:
a) I grew up on a farm, so I appreciate that aspect of your mission.
b) Having kids, I tend to appreciate the cause. Not to mention the impression it leaves on my children.
c) I was in Big Brothers for nine years and getting involved in the community is important to me.
d) I've contributed to The Lord's Pantry many times and I can see first hand how important my time, talent and treasure are to others around me.

That's pretty much it. I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.

It would have to be peak moments - where I feel I am in the right place at the right moment to notice with someone else that the earthy and the divine are a whole. And this seems to happen routinely in my work with disadvantaged youth. It's mostly about helping young people see that their frustrations with life are perfectly reasonable given their circumstances and that the antidote is not snatching up more things or engaging in ever grander distractions - efforts that will just make them feel even more disenfranchised - but to respect them and make a connection. So helping someone with a load of produce, cooking a new recipe, helping worms turn trash into fertilizer, participating in creation by growing food - these things are both practical and healing. If creativity is making something from nothing, and humor is making nothing of something, then a sense of humor and the ability to create are ways to move beyond the limited horizon of poverty. (Such the rambling philosopher I am.) Anyway, that's a start.
blessings - Alan

Pray the Devil Back to Hell

Pray the Devil Back to Hell

As I left the theater, I saw quite a bit of blood splattered near the escalator with 2 security personnel standing guard. I was already thinking about how the glassed-over eyes and hardened faces of the gun-toting boy soldiers in Liberia reminded me too much of gang-involved youth I have known in Indianapolis and Los Angeles. And now there was real blood on the doorstep of the theater (turns out it was an accident someone had, not a result of violence). Not that I fe… Continue
