Future Leadership
Rick Smyre, president of Communities of the Future, descirbes a new kind of leadership that is emerging. Rick is a former CEO and he has often shared with me how difficult it was for him to change his thinking and move away from traditional, top-down leadership approaches.

Where are We Going?
I'm not convinced that there is much clarity on a Brand for Indiana of the Future. Not what industries will we be invovled in, but what will we be known for? What will people think when they think of Indiana? Today, in terms of how people in other regions or cities see Indiana, I think they see corn fields. But I don't beleive that statement is a bash on our capabilities, it is a reflection of our long-term vision.

I saw that you were on the Business Roundtable Network (BRN) discussion in Smaller Indiana. We have our biggest event in our short history (Jan. 2009 until now) coming up next week. Been back to Elizabeth lately? With all that Caesars money they paved the roads, built a golf course by the high school (that's the road to my house btw - Old Dam 43 Road), etc. They've completely destroyed the mythology of my youth as growing up in the country. Nobody's going to believe that for a second when they turn left at the country club to head down fresh blacktop to get to your house!
