Data Catastrophe at T-Mobile

T-Mobile Sidekick users have suffered what may be one of the largest data losses of modern times. (The inferno that consumed the collection of the world's accumulated knowledge at the Library of Alexandria still holds first place for ALL TIME in my view.)

Over the past week, the Microsoft owned mobile technology company:… Continue

Rotary Invocation: Karma

Like most service clubs, The Rotary Club of Indianapolis assigns the duty of presenting invocations to its members. Being a diverse club, the suggestion is to avoid blatant reference to dieties of a particular religious tradition. That's pretty hard to do - so many members are Christian and they speak from their experience and faith.

But I like to mix it up! I've presented invocations from Masonic, Stoic and Optimist perspectives and have always received comp… Continue

E-Mail Roach Motel

Are you the target of too many e-mail newsletters? I receive 5-7 a week. These appear during the day. They momentarily distract my attention. Many of them are from companies and people I like. But I don't have time to read them when they arrive.

In the past, I'd let them accumulate in my in-box to read later. Then the torrent of e-mail (even after filtering) left anything delivered in the morn… Continue

Soft water, religion & technology

You know you have reached middle age when you invest in patio furniture or a soft water conditioner; optional life accessories that define a middle class lifestyle. I am way past middle age and firmly middle class so I have both.

Unlike lawn furniture, water softeners need occasional maintenance. Not difficult, just regular replacement of the salt that drives the process called ion exchange that yields the slippery water we want instead of the mineral laden abrasive slurry delivered by… Continue

Don't be afraid to call or email a business reporter yourself. Familiarize yourself with their work and maybe make a comment on a recent story that you liked. They may get calls from PR people all the time but probably not business people who are doing well. They key is to draft a SHORT, CONCISE message that you can communicate. (Your "elevator message") For example, email someone from the IBJ that covers your industry. The headline of your email is the most important part. Ex. Local Tech businesses thrives during Recession.
Tease your story angle in a few sentences then provide all of your contact info. Good luck.

Hi Kim I'm not sure if you remember me? I worked at Orbit-Tech for 3 years with your daughter. We met together on a joint proposal for the Blind School a couple years ago. Hope your business is doing well! I'm currently doing a job search. Looking to get back into project management, sales engineering or consulting. Let me know if you can think of anyone who could use someone with my background. See my resume' in "position wanted" section. - Jim
