As an audience member who files things into "Enjoy" or "Did Not Enjoy" without really being able to explain the finer points, I filed this show under "Enjoy." I don't think 45 minutes was adequate time to develop a story on multiple personalities, p…

Just posted my impressions of "Thurgoode," a flawed but fascinating production. It took quite a while to parse through my thoughts about the show. I'd love to get impressions from others.

This is my favorite photograph from all five festivals, and it just happens to be of Brent McCoy. His show is light-hearted and humorous, and it's suitable for all ages, and his extraordinary skills are nothing short of amazing.

That's definitely a different Erin! You should ask Pauline what her last name is... Wow, English Lit at Oxford is quite impressive.

Mason - Yes, I can cover "murder/hope" if you still need someone. I could do the Sunday show at 9, or possibly the Saturday show at 6. Did you already pick up your tix? If not, could you have Erik Deckers switch your name to mine? Let me know what works best. Thanks.

Fringe Blogging: "Thurgoode"

• Wednesday, Aug. 26, 9 p.m. — "Thurgoode," TOTS

Something unexpected happened to me in the last third of Heather Storms’ autobiographical, split-personality drama “Thurgoode.” I paused the running autopsy in my head — “amateurish, nonsensical, poorly staged, and just a big mess” — and started to enjoy the production on its own terms. I started to like the characters. I started to like the actors. The writing seemed to get sharper. The show earns some moments of deeply felt emotion, and I had t… Continue

Fringe Blogging: "Sex, Dreams and Self-Control, Part II"

If you have already seen Part I of “Sex, Dreams and Self-Control,” you probably have already made up your mind about seeing Part II. Either way, don’t let me dissuade you. If you enjoyed the first half of Kevin Thornton’s coming-out-and-coming-of-age-and-just-plain-coming monologue, you’ll enjoy the sense of closure that comes with Part II. If you thought Part I was just plain “meh,” or reprehensible for any number of button-pushing reasons, Part II isn’t going to change your mind.

I will say t… Continue

Fringe Blogging: "Groundwork Suites"

• Sunday, Aug. 23, 6 p.m. — Kenyetta Dance Company presents “Groundwork Suites”

I’ve always felt a bit at sea when reviewing dance. I’m unsure of the vocabulary of movements and styles, and I don’t have enough training or background to make any authoritative judgments. That said, I enthusiastically recommend the KDC’s performance of “Groundwork Suites,” choreographed by company dancer and artistic director Nicholas Owens. This elegant and earthy piece, as well as its robust and polished perform… Continue

Fringe Blogging: "Blunder Construction"

• Saturday, Aug. 22, 6 p.m. — Brent McCoy's "Blunder Construction"

Brent McCoy’s heroic one-man comedy show “Blunder Construction” is broadly appealing, slam-dunk entertainment. As a wide-eyed capacity crowd at Theater on the Square learned on Saturday, the endearing McCoy gets even more mileage out of clowning with the audience than his feats of oddball juggling and nimble physical gags. In his third year at Fringe Fest, McCoy doesn’t need too many more superlatives to draw a crowd. But I’ll s… Continue

Fringe Blogging: "Sex/Death"

Saturday, Aug. 22, 7:30 p.m. — The Bloomington Playwrights Project’s Ensemble of Artists presents “Sex/Death"

My friend Tom summed it up pretty well when he said, “I thought that was great, but I wasn’t so sure at the beginning.”

“Sex/Death,” a series of seven brisk scenes that explore those titular themes, grows on you. It’s like a blind date who, you soon discover, shares your favorite bands, episodes of “Dr. Who” and anything-goes attitude toward first-date sex. It’s a little rough and awkw… Continue
