I was lucky enough to score two free tickets to the Phantom of the Opera performed by the Indiana Ballet Company, thanks to Smaller Indiana. My husband Dan and I went last night to the show and were very impressed. I hadn't been to a ballet in several years, and the Phantom of the Opera is one of Dan's favorite narratives. It was also the first time either of us had been to the Madame Walker Theatre - what a beautiful venue (have you seen the funky monkeys above the stage!?). The performance was…

Week 26: IndyHub Passport to the Arts
You may not consider this an art event, but I feel the
IndyHub Passport to the Arts is something that Smoosiers need to take advantage of!
Passport to the Arts provides entrance to one performance of each of the following art organizations during the 2009/2010 season: Dance Kaleidoscope, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Indianapolis Opera, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Pho…

Week 25: Press ON exhibit at VSA arts of Indiana’s enROUTE Gallery in the Harrison Center
I recently had the pleasure of attending multiple exhibit openings at Harrison Center for the Arts. But there was one exhibit in particular that stood out to me: Press ON at
VSA arts of Indiana’s enROUTE Gallery.
First, let me tell you a little about VSA arts of Indiana (VSAI). VSAI is a non-profit leader in the movement to make the art…

My 8-year-old daughter and I almost didn't go to the Groundwork Suites by the Kenyettá Dance Company. We originally wanted to go to Blunder Construction, but they were sold out. We stood on the sidewalk in front of TOTS, and I wavered. Do we leave, do we do something else? I borrowed someone else's program, saw that Groundwork Suites was playing in 8 minutes.
My daughter is from Haiti, and we have taught her to be proud of being black. She also loves to move, and has taught herself some basic g…

Week 20: Circle the City 5K race benefitting the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
It's not that often that one gets to attend an art event that also provides a good work-out. It's also not often that an art event is tied in with a sport. However, on Saturday I participated in the Circle the City 5K race that benefitted the Indianapolis Symphony Orc…

I'm a big fan of the arts, especially in my hometown, Indianapolis. And whenever I go to see different art shows and exhibits, I always take the time to read the artist's statement. I know some artists struggle with writing their artist's vision statement, so here is a helpful template to help any artist come up with one they can use at their coming shows.
My name is __________ (my real name / a nom de guerre / something I saw on a label in an Asian food market), and I __________ (am an emergin…

I surprised my husband for his birthday last weekend by taking our family to see the Broadway musical,
Wicked in Indianapolis. If I were to review the show, I would write glowingly about the cleverness of the plot and the first class talent of the cast. If I were to review the Murat as a venue…aarrgghh!!!...don’t get me started! (In a nutshell, we loved the play
despite our experience with the Murat being so abysmal that I hope to never return for another event there.)
However, ra…

If you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary in the way of local arts & entertainment, and you are an adult who enjoys dark comedy, you may want to check out Lebanon's Center Stage Community Theatre’s production of
P.S. Your Cat is Dead.
Directed by Cheryl Fesmire, P.S. Your Cat is Dead was written by James Kirkwood. Set in the late 1970’s, it is the story of a down-on-his-luck actor-writer, Jimmy Zoole, played by Jonathan Evans. The two-act, four-cast member play takes…

Several days ago I ran across a blog post (via Twitterer @kimsherrell) about the
threat Hulu poses to
Comcast and its cable tv brethren. The author provided some logical but essentially finger-in-dam strategies: provide more free content via its on-demand digital service, and prod content providers to keep the good stuf…

There is a new push to give world class ballet a home in Indianapolis. That’s a tough sell in a sports minded city. My friends and I simply weren’t raised to think of ballet as anything more than a program to skip over when searching for a good basketball game on TV. It’s something little girls want to do when they are six, right? The truth is…it’s cool, and that’s coming from a guy who played competitive football, basketball, baseball, and swimming. Growing up, ballet to me was something I coul…

Storytelling Arts of Indiana (SAI) is pleased to announce that its 2009/2010 season will kick off with a new event—a Liar’s Contest to be held during the Indiana State Fair. Perennial crowd-pleaser Scary Stories also is part of the upcoming season, despite the not-for-profit organization’s decision to cancel its 22nd annual Hoosier Storytelling Festival because of cuts in public arts funding.
The funding cuts have had an impact on Storytelling Arts, forcing some difficult choices. After thoroug…

As I write this post, several thousand Indianapolis arts and culture supporters converged earlier today at a downtown rally. It was cold and rainy, bone-chilling weather typical of the wild and woolly Hoosier spring. Many of those brave souls are probably still dialing down the shivers…
