Patric Welch This time around, it's lose weight or lose money

I've struggled a lot over the past couple of years to lose some weight. I haven't always been this way. In fact, when my first child was born nearly 8 years ago, I weighed about 30 pounds less than I do now. I know, I keep thinking the same thing. What happened? I could write all kinds of excuses here but that's not what this blog post is about. This blog post is about finally putting my money where my mouth is. Literally. This time I'm "stickking" to it Enter the web site, Stickk, wh… Continue

Casey Mullins Expanding my Muffin in the Name of Charity.

Let's face it.

Me? In a charity pancake eating contest against former rock stars and a local weather guy? I don't stand a chance. I can talk smack, but in this case? I can't bring it.

Bill Bean Target Taps Social Media For Charity

Kudos to Target's progressive fund raising for charity. Social media is a great tool for charities, allowing them to build more direct connections with donors and they are so much more cost effective. Having multiple channels of outreach and communication is absolutely essential. Assuming you're on Facebook, visit their page and vote for my personal favorite, The Salvation Army. It w… Continue

Daniel Herndon Does being a socially responsible business increase sales?

Coming up this May 23rd I (Daniel Herndon) will be participating in a Celebrity Pancake eating contest called Carb Day for a Cause. Although I am not a celebrity per se, I once made my living in a Rock Band and I work with companies all over the country doing experiential marketing and events. Ultimately what it came down to is my eating skills and a love for pancakes and the needy. Often times we… Continue

Casey Mullins March for Babies this Sunday, in memory of Madeline Alice Spohr.

If you follow my blog at all then you will know I was in LA this past week with my best friend after her 17 month old daughter passed away. Madeline was born at 29 weeks and was kept alive and thriving for 17 months thanks to the research done by the March of Dimes. I had this march set up before Maddie passed and it's even more important to me now. Maddie's mom Heather's team has raised over $40K in Maddie's memory, our team goal is a little lower, only $2K… Continue

Raquel Richardson The Start of Shanna's Story

A few weeks ago I was approached by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to participate in a fundraiser for their research, cause and mission. The typical gala fundraiser was being replaced with a compeititon for Woman/Man of the Year with local men and women competing for the title over a nine week period. Then I met Stacia Renbarger (she and her husband own Prostar Consulting - great outsourced payroll service yo… Continue

PK Koduri Vanity, Charity, and Waste

I am all for giving money to charities and supporting worthy causes. So it is with great interest I have been following Twestival and its efforts to raise money for water well projects in Africa. It is truly an innovative use of a new piece of technology which in this case is Twitter, a micro blogging service. I think it is a great idea and I wish them all the luck as they try to reach their goal of $1 Million. But as a student of business I am just amazed at the proliferation of cause

Ben McCann Funding a Charitable Life Estate Plan Using Life Insurance

No crystal ball can reveal what will ultimately happen with the house part of your estate. Although, the house is often a donor’s largest asset in his or her estate, its value can fluctuate depending on factors beyond a donor’s control. One way to plan around this uncertainty is to create a “charitable life estate” complete with enough life insurance to replace the “would be” value of the home. What is a “Charitable Life Estate”? A charitable life estate involves gifting a reside… Continue

Lori Lowe Food Banks are Running Dry--Please lend a hand

Mayor Greg Ballard made an impassioned plea recently for those in the Indianapolis area to help replenish the empty shelves at local food pantries. Wherever you live, the situation is probably similar. If you have children, collecting food items is a great opportunity to show them how to share with those in need. This summer my kids sent flyers around the neighborhood and collected many bags of food. I then gave them a small amount of money to go to the grocery and learn how to select appropria… Continue

Mike Seidle Indianapolis Looses Lucious Newsom

Last night Indianapolis lost a man who has done more for the homeless, helpless and poor than anyone I've ever known. Lucious Newsom passed away at St. Francis hospital. For those of you who never met Lucious, he was a unique and powerful person who used his personal charm, musical gift and oversized heart to help the homeless and poor. His tradmark was his old-fashioned blue jeans overalls and big smile. His legacy is Anna's House - a shelter for the poor and hungry - and the many people who's… Continue

Lisa Sirkin Vielee Back Packs for Success (or Way to Go Marty!)

Congratulations to Marty Posch and all those involved with the Back Pack Attack for successfully raising 425,000 school supply items for needy school-agers. Marty tells me that filled 8,800 backpacks. Wow. And I grumble about having to buy the two boxes of kleenexes and the 8 glue sticks, etc. , etc. that I have to provide each year for my kids. But I can afford it, so I send the big WalMart bag with the kiddos each first day. Imagine how it would feel to be a seven-year-old and NOT be able to… Continue

Amy Stark Do any Smoosiers know the name of the oldest running secular-association in the US? It is still active today with a presence in virtually every major city.

I will give you three clues: 1) Elias Ashmole (the first guy pictured) is the documented first member (mid 1600s England). Our friend, Elias, founded the 1st Museum at Oxford, and they have a wonderful website-- The Ashmolean Museum of Art and AContinue

Bonnie Benshoof Helping the Homeless!

I know as a business owner, you can get caught up in your own little world, but have you thought of the homeless? I heard of a beautiful story today from a friend of 29 years, that I had to share. She had taken her son to his birthday party at the circle city mall, they had went for pizza in the mall, ordered 3 pizzas, all the kids had eaten and they had one large pizza left, she noticed there was a man looking down at the table in his grubby clothes, and new that this man was probably homeless… Continue
