Sheri LeVine The Ringing of the Bells Part 1

It’s that time of year again. The decorations are going up. The Christmas music is playing. I’m a bit of a Scrooge about Christmas music. The radio stations that start playing it the day of Thanksgiving, or even earlier this year, for me it just gets old and stale. I know, I know, turn the station. I also am burned out on all of the old Christmas movies, but I quite enjoy Elf and Love Actually – how’s that for some new Christmas classics! And I’m not much of a shopper. I love spending time with… Continue

Gwyneth Another Mother's Day Gift

In my family of siblings and half siblings, mothers, step-mothers, and mothers-in-law, I estimate that during the collective thirty-plus years of celebrating Mother's Day we've come up with nearly 200 gift ideas. Undoubtedly, there have been some repeats. This is the time when my siblings and I begin brainstorming, and each year it gets harder to come up with something that feels fresh or useful or at least not completely lame. It is time to take things to the next level. This year to celebrate… Continue

Shannon Gross Wondering How to Donate to Your Favorite Animal-Related Charities? Six Simple Questions Help Focus Your Giving

I was ready to wrap up this newsletter (really ready) when I had a funny feeling that I should write just one more article. Shawn Quick-Raflik Rescued Dogs Get New Forever Home

A fews months ago, my husband and I found two dogs running around our neighborhood. One of our neighbors told us that they had been loose in the area for several days. After much coaxing, we finally where able to trap them in our garage. They were both beautiful and you could tell they were best friends. I posted photos and a story about them here on SI and on Craigslist. Several people told me about the Northern Lights Sled Dog Rescue, Inc. and even passed my story on to the rescue. They contac… Continue

Shawn Quick-Raflik Shopping for Strangers!

I had the opportunity to volunteer to wrap donated Christmas gifts for the Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis last week. The donated gifts are for individuals with mental illness who are living in area group homes and hospitals. The gifts ranged in size and value. Some had asked for clothing items and others asked for CDs and DVDs. My favorite gift was for a lady that wanted a case of Root Beer and a hair brush. I decided to stay until all the gifts were wrapped, it took a few hours.… Continue

Rae Kridel It's a Mitzvah

In Judaism, it's called a Mitzvah. The word can have a number of different meanings, one of which is "commandment" and another is "covenant." But when someone says that it's a mitzvah, it means something like "righteous good deed." Sort of, there's not really a good translation. It's definitely not charity, because charity denotes that you're helping because it makes you feel like you've helped, or because you feel sorry for them. With a mitzvah, there's no pity involved. You do it because it's… Continue
