Okay, so not in my plans for Nicaragua was participating in the women's study group (insert God's chuckle here). I avoided that part of our team meetings leading up to the trip. Not interested. I'm newer to my faith and spirituality (when is that excuse not an excuse anymore?) and helping someone with a women's group intimidates me.
Well, the woman leading that group, Jen, and I started chatting on the first night in Nic about our faith journeys and continued to do so sporadically throughout th… Continue

What are you passionate about? Below is clip on the passion that Rolex harnesses to create the bezel on their watches. This watch retails for $10,000. Pretty big commitment to excellence both for the maker and the customer.
When I saw this clip, it got me wondering what it means to be God wants me to be passionate about. Below is a link to the teaching at Pathway on Sunday where we talked about how to make Christ our on-going passion. We compared and contrasted two paradigms… Continue
It was late summer of 1976 and my girlfriend of two years had just broken off our relationship. We had been together for a couple of years and had talked about marriage after college. I did not realize that her influential parents had different ideas for their daughter, a beautiful strawberry blond with more freckles than I could count.
I was heart-broken and felt very alone. I knew that I would not find peace about this breakup until I felt fully connected with God.
Growing up in an o… Continue

Earlier this year I started a blog called Christ Centered Dad where I write about Faith, Family and Fun. It was something I had considered doing for a while, but was nervous about opening up about my faith. After all, I'm a messed up human being... and Google will remember that as long as this world exists.
Many of my own fears about a faith-based blog is shared by churches and their online presence. I think there's some big reasons the church (as an… Continue
Growing up in the fifties and sixties, my two favorite things to do were to read comic books and go to the movies at a downtown theatre, which was long before we had video games, personal computers, or DVDs.
I learned from comics that I wanted to be like the superheroes, especially ‘Superman’, because they always helped people who were in trouble. At the theatre, it was like magic, the smell of popcorn and the thrill of escape from the doldrums of reality and into the world of adventur… Continue

Fear can be a paralyzing force in our lives, but it can also be an invigorating power that drives us to overcome adversity and tragedy that is thrown into our paths.
On March 4, 1933 in his first presidential inaugural speech, Franklin Delano Roosevelt asserted his firm belief that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Years later, on December 7, 1941 in his "this day in infamy" speech resulting from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he withheld his comments about fear, i… Continue
Once I made the leap from for-profit corporate environments to local church non-profit faith I learned quickly how good, or pathetic, of a leader and cultural architect I was. It's easy to figure out when your team is all volunteers. After all who follows you when they aren't paid too? Who respects and wants to be a part of "your thing" when the motivation of chedda isn't involved?
And in this same fashion of servant-leader and motive adaptation I ponder Purple Cow theology.
As the Purple Cow… Continue
The other day I heard on the radio that John McCain is uncomfortable discussing his faith in public. My mom is like that, too. She was raised Lutheran and thinks faith is a personal thing one does not discuss outside of the church community.
I volunteer on the marketing co… Continue
As I was getting Emma dressed one morning, I asked my little one about her pretty pink top, which had diamond-like buttons. “They’re so pretty Emma. They look just like diamonds!” With big round eyes she looked up at me and replied “Yep! They are not the pully-kind of buttons (she me… Continue

Well, Sort Of....This is a bit of a response to my church, who asked me to write an article for their newsletter on how I manage a large family, homeschool, and run my art business. I thought maybe some of you also might enjoy a peak into a family our size to see what "makes us tick" and… Continue
Since we have maximized the amount of posting space that will appear in the SI forum, and although the discussion continues, I thought it would be good to start a new one. I invite all of those who have posted before and have been following and those who are new to continue the discussion that Kyle Lacy started. In an attempt to keep it to the Nature of SI... Here are some ground rules for this blog that I hope everyone can respect.
1. Keep it clean (no cheap shots and hitting below the belt)
