Put the Spotlight on Your Yard

With fall in full swing and winter knocking at our door, daylight becomes a rare commodity. Many of us leave for work while it’s still dark and then not return home until it’s dark again. A good lighting system can brighten up your home’s exterior to enjoy when you arrive back after a long day at the office.

Some homeowners assume they should wait until spring to install professional landscape lighting. They think that they will not be able to enjoy the lights because it’s cold, and…

Holiday Tipping Guidelines

Simply put, a holiday tip is a wonderful way to show appreciation for those individuals who have taken care of us and made our lives easier throughout the year.

Embracing the spirit of the holiday season, we should show our gratitude for the service providers listed here by offering a cash tip (or small gift) along with a handwritten note in a holiday card.

Before you…

Quick Tips: Shoulder and Back pain

For those of you who are unable to make it in to see your favorite massage therapist during the busy Holidays, I have a quick tip. If you have painful spots located between your shoulder blades or along your spine, grab a tennis ball. Lie on the floor and place a tennis ball under your back, lined up between the shoulder blade and the spine. Roll the shoulder blade on the tennis ball until you find the sorest spot. Continue rolling the tennis ball, focused on this area for about two minutes.… Continue

Holiday Thanks for the SI Community

As I sit here listening to Smoosier Richard Ramsey play beautiful Christmas music on his SI profile page, I'm reminded of all the wonderful gifts that the Smaller Indiana community has to share. I think the best thing about SI is the people I've gotten to know -- if only electronically -- and the awesome impact they make on the world and on me in so many ways.

I'm reminded of… Continue

Indiana's Own Christmas Story

Every year I look forward to so many Christmas rituals. But what I really love about Christmas is the ubiquitous holiday movie…A Christmas Story.

Ah, how I absorb myself in the trials and tribulations of young Ralphie, whose only necessity in this world is the Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle BB gun with a compass in the stock. A boy, whose frazzled mother refuses to buy him the BB gun because “…you’ll shoot your eye out” but forces him to model pink… Continue

The Worst Christmas Gifts for 2008

Internet stupid heads and online store, Stupid.com, have released their list of the 10 worst presents to give someone this year, and it looks like a good one. These guys have created an online empire of stupid, tasteless, or just plain gross gifts, and they're probably rich as a result. So if anyone knows stupid gifts, it's these guys.

They sell the stuff people give as a gag gift. Stuff that Jeff Foxworthy mentions right after the words, "You… Continue

Single During the Holidays......What to Do, What to Do, What to Do!

The holiday season has been deemed the loneliest time of year for singles. Believe it or not, if you are single you can make this holiday season the high point of your year. Here are five tips for being successfully single during the holidays.

1) Get invited- Being single does not mean you have to sit at home alone, in fact why not see what your friends are up to? That just might get you invites to some great holiday gatherings or dinner parties. You just might end up with more… Continue

Fire Safety During the Holidays

With the holiday season barreling down upon us, it occurred to me that this would be a perfect time to bring up fire safety. While residential fires increase steadily as the temperature falls, the three-day period of December 24-26 is a particularly dangerous period from a home fire standpoint. According to the United States Fire Administration fire deaths, injuries, and dollar loss increase an average of 50%, 61%, and 43%, respectively. But… Continue
