New GM Jobs a Sign of Things to Come?
General Motors Company's plans to invest more than $350 million and add more than 360 jobs in Marion is an indication Indiana will continue to be a major player in the auto industry, according to a University of Indianapolis professor. In a Studio(i) interview this morning, UIndy Professor of Finance Matt Will says Indiana seems to be faring better than neighboring states in the industry’s continued restructuring.

By now you know that #4 is going to play football for the Minnesota Vikings. Every commentator/columnist I have heard is calling this entire thing a charade and arguing that Favre is tarnishing his legacy.
You know what I find interesting about that sentence? It’s the word “his”. It is his choice to do whatever he wants to do with his life – no one else’s.
This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Steve Jobs”
“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't b…

I have been working on helping people in Job Transition for a few years now ( on the side ) for FREE. Since I have always been a good networker, lots of people have sent me their resumes to "keep my eyes open" and other companies and clients send me job postings because I have a "good eye" for talent.
By December 2008 I had more of these emails then I could handle, but I still wanted to help as many people as possible. After being a part of SI almost since the beginning, I decided to do somethi…

I had a conversation with a friend yesterday about a marketing position I'm attempting to fill. I shared with my pal that I interviewed a nice person with an undergrad degree in marketing from a very reputable school and is currently obtaining a masters degree. Sounds nice, right? Afterall, I have a marketing position available and the candidate is well-educated (within marketing), friendly and professional. So, why haven't I drafted an employment agreement yet?
There was something missing. I w…

Chris Flener got me thinking (Chris has a habit of being thought provoking) with a comment he made. Chris's was to the effect that people's comments, especially political ones, on sites like Smaller Indiana should not be used against them in real life. Ethics aside, reality is that everyone from your next employer to law enforcement to th

Almost half of Americans report being more stressed than a year ago, according to this week’s
USA Today. One-third of Americans are suffering from “extreme” stress. Unfortunately, the survey was taken before the stock market plunged, so the real numbers are probably worse. That stress is affecting eating and sleeping levels, and inevitably how we relate to others. Go to
Life Gems to find out how you can keep your cool and protect your family ami…

One of the quickest ways for a résumé to find its way to the round file, or the no thanks stack, is to start it out with the ho-hum, everybody does it, old school approach of The Objective. The Objective – the phrase sounds like it should be the name or the title of some drama based TV show or motion picture. When it comes to a job résumé, everybody knows what the objective is – and that is to get a job – wrong (tricked ya), it is to get an interview. Don’t bring drama into your résumé with The…

I need help deciding what career to choose – this is a frequent comment or concern from people of all ages. It comes from those who are in mid-life looking for a change, people who have found their jobs eliminated for whatever reason, and also from high school and college students trying to figure it out before they spend too much time and money going a direction that might not be the best.
This can be a confusing, frustrating, and intimidating thing to work through. So, many people turn to car…

I have to admit, I have a love affair. No...not THAT kind of affair, but one of a more pure nature. I've had a love for small business, sole proprietors, and independent business people for a long time. When you consider that approximately 38% of everyone who has a job works for a small business or is self employed
(Census Bureau Statistics for 2004...most recent year I could find) that's a lot of love to go around...
But…
