Many people are on their way to becoming professional job searchers. They have their application process down to a science. When a new job gets posted they proceed with their usual routine:
1. tidy resume/portfolio
2. customize cover letter template
3. cross their fingers and hope for the best
Professional job searcher, in this context, becomes somewhat of an oxymoron. The better you get at your routine, the more times your routine has failed. Maybe it is time to break the mold?
Take this job…

I finally went to the gym the other day. I set my goal for a modest ten-minute mile and succeeded. When I was done, I stretched and watched the other joggers. Do you know what I saw? A bunch of people checking out their neighbor's treadmill. You know, the stealthy, sneak-a-peak, let's-see-if-I-can-beat-this-guy kind of look.
It made me think about the first time I joined a gym. I was fresh out of high school and fresh out of a way to exercise since I played basketball and softball year round. I…

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of speaking at the
Web 2.0 Expo in New York. My session went very well and we got excellent feedback but I also had a wonderful time attending the other presentations and learning from other speakers.
The first session that really piqued my interest was "

My co-workers know how much I love my PSP, and how much of a love-hate relationship I have with Sony. But I just gotta give them credit for one of the best online social media marketing strategies I have seen. Not only does Sony have a very well run Blog, Twitter feed, and Facebook page, but they have both the KAHONAS and the common-sense needed to run them effectively. Other companies concerned about their branding in the brutal arena of social media would do well to follow their example.
Soci…

MySpace has been struggling against the ever growing popularity of Facebook, but I believe the real “last nail in the coffin” is coming from Twitter. MySpace used to pummel my inbox with “friends” I have never met, but apparently found me irresistibly sexually attractive. I was beginning to think I had lost that cyber-sex appeal as my MySpace spam trickled to a stop. Lo and behold, my inbox has once again began filling with pleas from girls who desperately wanted to meet me. This time it wasn’t…

With the advent of all of these social media tools like
Twitter and
Facebook, online privacy becomes a big issue. Some people stay off these tools all together in fear of sharing too much information with the
World Wide Web. For instance, on
Facebook, you can find my birthday, the school and year that I graduated from college, my girlfriend’s name, and even my job title, email address, and
iChat screen name. This information is private and relates only to me fo…

In today's market, credit unions are enjoying renewed popularity among consumers due to their membership-driven policies, personal service, and local community ties. Many people are drawn to these features of their local credit unions and are starting with research on the web.
For this reason, progressive credit unions must capture the attention of these researchers with a compelling online story via a modern corporate website.
Great design. This should be obvious but many cre…

There has been so much “controversy” and discussion over this whole idea of “GHOSTBLOGGING.” In my opinion, it’s quite ridiculous. The things us “ghostbloggers” hear from social media purist?
•It’s not being truly authentic
•It’s not ethical
•It’s not real if it’s not from the actual person

Social media and SEO have taken another step closer toward being inseparable. With last week’s major announcements from both Google and Bing (Microsoft), search engine rankings will now depend more heavily on updates from Facebook and Twitter.
Both Google and Bing plan to include Twitter status updates as a part of…

There. I said it. And I am sick and tired of watching these so-called “social media experts” push social media on companies like its some cure-all.
We’re in the middle of a market phenomenon. You’ve got this new technology that’s radically new, difficult to quantitatively measure, and marinated in hype from all angles. Now add a massive market of organizations that aren’t tech savvy enough to fully “get it” but are just savvy enough to know they need to “join the conversation” and you’ve got a…

Offline social networks are affected by race and socio-economic status. Why would social media networks be any different than "real world" networks? (Need a better descriptor than "real world")
"I have friends who are white," says 19-year-old Diego Luna. "They are my white people friends and they are mostly on Facebook. That's why I use Facebook. My brown people are on MySpace." Diego Luna,19, in an NPR interview.

It’s easy to keep a relationship going with customers when you have a product or service that creates repeat purchases. But what about when your business is mostly a one-time sale per customer? There are two questions to answer: Why continue that relationship, and how?
Why you should keep that relationship going is, in one word, referrals. If you gave your customer a great experience, they will refer family, friends, neighbors and even people they don’t know (have you listened to grocery-store…

From our very beginnings as a non-profit desiring to connect the young people in our community to serving others, the Emergent Leadership Institute has leaned heavily on social media. For a young non-profit with limited financial resources, social media provided our organization with immediate ties to our target market (14-22 year old students) at little or no coast to our bottom line. Embracing social media wasn't as much of a strategic plan or desire to connect to youth culture, as it felt lik…

Whenever I give a presentation to a group of people, I open it up for questions at the end. This usually leads to some interesting questions. It also tells me what topics people are interested in that I might want to cover in future presentations.
One question that always comes up is the one about social networking, or social media. It usually comes in one of the following flavors:
- "What is this Twitter thing?"
- "My daughter told me to get on Facebook. It seems like a big wast

When you own or manage a business that provides repeat business opportunities, it’s important to stay in touch with your customers. It’s not a difficult thing to do, but often something small business owners and managers don’t think about – or feel they don’t have time for.
There are many quick, easy ways to stay top of mind. Just “being there when they need something” isn’t enough. Why? Because there are many other companies up and down the street who offer the same product or service – and th…

Isn't it true so often that as we get older, we realize how right our parents were in many situations? For example, I remember sitting down at the kitchen table after each birthday and Christmas and writing thank you cards to everyone who gave me a gift - something my mom would make me do every time. I often thought “how lame” because, in many cases, I already thanked them when I opened the gift.
Fast forward to now, and I see how smart she was! And she didn’t own a business. When I receive a t…
