Robby Slaughter Reasons To Say "No Comments"

As my blog Turning Left Against Traffic barrels into another year, readers and dissenters seem to offer one unifying query. Why does this blog refuse to permit comments? For the answer to this puzzling question, you will need to head down an electronic rabbit hole. Namely: venturing past this teaser paragraph into the heart of the post.… Continue

Henry Kurkowski The big dogs start chasing the WiFi stick

What do Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have in common? They are all executing new plans to utilize Free managed WiFi access to connect people with information, gain bigger audiences and increase loyalty. To me, that seems like a pretty smart plan. Yahoo’s plan is centered on Times Square, a major hub for millions of New Yorkers and visitors of The Big Apple. Free WiFi access will be given in that area until next year and it’s a great way to reach people while they are out and about. It’s like a Ho… Continue

Kim Brand Data Catastrophe at T-Mobile

T-Mobile Sidekick users have suffered what may be one of the largest data losses of modern times. (The inferno that consumed the collection of the world's accumulated knowledge at the Library of Alexandria still holds first place for ALL TIME in my view.) Over the past week, the Microsoft owned mobile technology company:… Continue

Bill Bean Nomenclature Overload Achieved - Thanks Google Wave!

I wasn't that interested in Google Wave until I realized I had been left out in the cold. Now I feel so...September 2009. Yesterday, I started reading what people have to say about the new wunder-app. Most recently (a few minutes ago), I discovered the Ars Technica review of Google Wave. Couple things I have to say. First, email is not antiquated. Sheesh! Now I really feel old. Seriousl… Continue

Douglas Karr An Open Letter to Indiana about Life Sciences

There's no doubt how important Roche and Eli Lilly are to our economy here in central Indiana. As well, I'm forever appreciative of the work these folks do and the impact it will have on the human race. I have friends at both companies and have helped them with their technology and social media strategies. I'm looking forward to seeing how technology will transform their industries. That said, my next remarks are not meant to anger the industry... rather to promote a different one. Indiana - pl… Continue

Jeb Banner Focus

I just returned from a week's vacation. I spent some of the time reading "100 Best Business Books of All Time". After about thirty 2 page summaries I noticed an overall trend- focus. The difference between successful and unsuccessful people and organizations is clearly pegged to their ability to focus. This extends to their "Hedgehog" as well as th… Continue

Patric Welch Old school technology slaps me right in the face

It finally happened. I've lost touch with the old way of doing things. I was recently complaining to my wife that I could not get a hold of a guy that I desperately needed to get a hold of. I told her I had sent emails, messaged him on Facebook and even sent a text message. She looked me right in the eye and asked, "Did you call him?" My face turned red. Oh yeah. You can still do that. I dialed his number and he answered on the second ring. Continue

Amy Magan It works if you work it.

Remember Jill* from my office? The one who is both clueless and brilliant at the same time? Well, yesterday morning, Jill was looking for me. I was at an offsite meeting from 8am to noon. I had the meeting scheduled on my electronic calendar, which is accessible by everyone in the office. Because of the nature of the meeting (we were running a focus group), I had my cell phone (… Continue

Mark Grossnickle Augmented Reality: Flash and Beyond

About a year ago, I first got a taste of Augmented when I was watching Mario Klingemann's "Here be Pixels" presentation for the Head Conference. During the presentation, Mr. Doob pointed out that there was a great library for Flash and Augmented reality called FLARToolkit, which was ported over from ARToolkit by SaqooshContinue

Mike Seidle Is Antivirus Enough?

Recently one of my kids got nuked by the "Personal Antivirus" malware. It's a sneaky thing that is installed when you view the wrong (and that means a compromised site, not a bad site) website and then tries to scare you into buying a $19.95 subscription for updates. The funny part is that this thing installed itself despite Norton Security suite being up to date and running. Recently Symantec's DaContinue

Patric Welch Could technology lead to the end of the world?

Last week I demonstrated a handful of consumer electronics to a local group of people in Indianapolis. I talked about the good and the bad for each one with the goal of letting each audience member decide whether to love or leave the technology. I concluded by opening up the floor for a general Q & A session. The Q & A quickly turned to a discussion about what the nectarines Twitter and Facebook are. As I explained each one, I looked around the room and noticed a lot of quizical faces s… Continue

Patric Welch Sometimes you need to put technology away and just enjoy the show

Last night, my wife and I attended the Billy Joel, Elton John Face 2 Face concert. It's no surprise that, since our kids were born, we haven't been to a lot of concerts so I found it fascinating to people-watch throughout the concert. Even more fascinating was the tremendous use (and mis-use) of technology during the concert. I wish I could have talked to the people I observed but it was a little too crowded for that. But here's what I would have said:
  • To the teenagers and 20 somethin

Kelli B Schmith "Social Media Made Me Do It" and Other Silly Career Notions

I love a spicy debate over new technology or social trends, and these days it’s impossible to mention Twitter or Facebook without triggering a verbal throw-down. Once as separate as church and state, technology and social engagement are now inextricably bound together. The whole notion scares the bejeebees out of people. Thanks to the near-mainstreaming of Twitter, Facebook and other community platforms, it’s a cinch to elicit a stream of grunts and eye-rolling from your spouse, colleagues and… Continue

Douglas Karr IBJ: Indianapolis tech firms’ national stars rising

I'm not trying to promote my own company here - but the promotion of ANY Indianapolis business on a national level should be cause for celebration. BusinessWeek did a great article on the Most Promising Startups in the country and Vontoo and Compendium Blogware both made the list! Thanks to… Continue

Ernest Rando Are you interested in a job as a solar installer?

The above is in reference to an article in Treehugger online magazine. I am quite aware of the economic situations of many of my fellow Hoosiers with experience in the construction field. Also quite frankly I like Solar Panels and Solar Technology. Just seems pretty weird we are so willing to drill for oil and search for oil, but we have a hard time accepting that we need to use the Solar ene… Continue

Kim Brand Soft water, religion & technology

You know you have reached middle age when you invest in patio furniture or a soft water conditioner; optional life accessories that define a middle class lifestyle. I am way past middle age and firmly middle class so I have both. Unlike lawn furniture, water softeners need occasional maintenance. Not difficult, just regular replacement of the salt that drives the process called ion exchange that yields the slippery water we want instead of the mineral laden abrasive slurry delivered by… Continue

Anthony Ware A penny for your thoughts...

A non-scientific review of Indianapolis business trends reveals that technology companies are growing despite the economy. Now, I'm not selecting the technology industry to suggest that everyone should switch to that industry. As a business consulting firm, we use technology but are far from a technology company. One of our partners, Dave Castor at Alerding Castor, keeps our team informed about technology. I just think that other industries can learn from the technology industry. Whether your… Continue

Milo Curtis Tech & Serving a House Fire

One of the great things about tech is the opportunity to communicate in real-time the needs and opportunities we have to serve others. Last week (Feb. 23) there was a devastating house fire (IndyStar Article here)in our community that destroyed everything in the home. Through a series of relationships… Continue
