People complain about spam all of the time. But not me. Between Gmail and Google Apps I get very little spam. And the spam that I do get is nicely tucked away in a special spam folder that I need only check about once per week.
But guess what showed up on my mobile phone today?

I've always hated punch cards. You know, the kind you get at a restaurant, bakery or oil change place that reward you for every X number of purchases?
It's not that I don't like getting something for free as a reward for doing business with someone. It's that I can never remember to take the punch card with me when I visit the establishment. That, and I really don't like carrying them in my wallet (for more on this watch this video).
Which means I have about 3 or 4 punch cards for each place b…

It finally happened. I've lost touch with the old way of doing things.
I was recently complaining to my wife that I could not get a hold of a guy that I desperately needed to get a hold of. I told her I had sent emails, messaged him on Facebook and even sent a text message.
She looked me right in the eye and asked, "Did you call him?"
My face turned red. Oh yeah. You can still do that.
I dialed his number and he answered on the second ring.

Wordle generate word clouds from text and I thought I’d give
Wordle a try by putting a portion from my resume to see how it turns out. I played around with the layouts and colors and it’s really fun.

I was driving down the road today and noticed a sign in front of a church that read:
"Need Prayer? Txt 501-6654"
Two emotions hit me immediately. The first was to think how cool it was that the church was embracing technology and encouraging younger generations to pray using the communication method most familiar to them. This emotion was follow…

I love using services like PingMe to remind me when to return books to the library or when to pay my quarterly taxes. And Google's calendar reminders come in awful handy to make sure I don't miss my haircut or doctor appointment.
But why should the burden of setting up all of these reminders fall on my shoulders? Why can't the library send me a text message a few days before my books are due? And the IRS when my taxes are due? Why don't hair salons and health clinics use appointment software th…

Last night, my wife and I attended the Billy Joel, Elton John Face 2 Face concert. It's no surprise that, since our kids were born, we haven't been to a lot of concerts so I found it fascinating to people-watch throughout the concert.
Even more fascinating was the tremendous use (and mis-use) of technology during the concert. I wish I could have talked to the people I observed but it was a little too crowded for that. But here's what I would have said:
- To the teenagers and 20 somethin

So I'm listening to Radio Disney with my kids in the car and I hear a promo saying that you can now listen to Radio Disney on your smart phone. Given that my iPhone qualifies as a smart phone, I was all ears (pardon the Disney pun).
The promo mentioned that to start the process of listening to Radio Disney on your smart phone, you need to text the word LISTEN to 347639 (which spells DISNEY on your phone).
I couldn't resist trying something new and cool
Excited to see how this worked, I…

With the explosion of the Internet, there are certainly no shortages of ways to promote and advertise your business. So when Scott Abel from the Content Wrangler posted on Twitter about a new way to promote your business on a t-shirt, my initial thought was "big deal."
I'm glad I decided to follow Scott's link anyway. The link took me to a web site for a company called Reactee. Reactee lets you effortlessly create a t-shirt containing a brief message of your choosing. That's not the cool part.…

Tomorrow Indianapolis will host it's OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.. For those of you outside Indianapolis, a mini-marathon is the same as a half-marathon, or 13.1 miles. I discovered that the term mini-marathon is unique to Indianapolis when I went to Arizona earlier this year for the P.F. Changs Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon. People looked at me really strange when I referred to their half-marathon as a mini-marathon.
This year, I heard that someone (sorry, I can't remember…

Last Saturday night, I was waiting for a concert to begin and I noticed a teenage girl in the row in front of me with an iPhone. She was sending text messages, presumably to one of her friends, every couple of minutes. I found myself fascinated at how fast she could construct a text message, especially using the iPhone touch screen which many people believe slows them down. And to think she was typing this fast using only her thumbs!
This got me to thinking about a video my Dad shared with me r…

I remember when tv dinners used to take 45 minutes to cook in the oven. Then microwaves came along and those same tv dinners could be cooked in 3-4 minutes. But now even 3-4 minutes seems too long to wait and I find myself longing for the next big thing that will cook my tv dinner in 15 seconds.
It's scary how fast new technology becomes yesterday's news. Another example of this is shipping companies and their tracking information. Several years ago, it was a big deal to be able to track your U…

I get text message alerts on my cell phone when my children's school is delayed or closed. I get an email when their lunch accounts run low. Is it too much to ask to get an alert when the school bus is nearing my house? I think not which is why bus stop text message alerts are today's technology I'd like to see (TILTS).
Every morning, I take my children to the bus stop at the same time. I always allow a few extra minutes since I never know whether the bus driver will be early, on time or late t…

Do you feel like you're running a technology marathon?
I just came back from a long weekend trip to Arizona where I had a chance to visit three of my sisters as well as complete the P.F. Changs Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. This is the fourth half marathon I have completed and each time I have discovered another trick or two to help me complete the half marathon with more energy and less injury.
I also discovered that while I may not be the best half marathon competitor, I can definitely still c…

I remember as a kid how I excited I was when I woke up on a school day and discovered several inches of snow had fallen on the ground. The first thought that always hit me was, "I hope school is closed!"
In those days, there wasn't a whole lot of technology to announce school closings. In fact, the primary communication method was the radio. And the radio stations only announced the school delays and closings every 15 minutes so you really had to pay attention. And since they always made the an…

Earlier this week I encountered some slippery roads which caused the anti-lock brakes on my car to kick in during a sudden stop. When I first felt the car sliding my temptation was to pump the brakes because that's what I was taught to do when I learned how to drive. But before I even had a chance to pump the brakes I heard the familiar grinding sound of the anti-lock brakes and realized that the car's computer had beat me to the punch.
This got me to thinking about how some technologies force…

I belong to the Dad's Club at my children's school as well as participate in a wonderful organization called All Pro Dad. As part of being an All Pro Dad, I subscribe to their email newsletter and always look forward to the great parenting advice they give me.
One email newsletter in particular, sent this week, really caught my eye. Here's an excerpt from that email:
In order to effectively parent your children, you need to keep up on the latest technology. If you haven't learned the art of…

I have whole-heartedly adopted text messaging. I clearly see the benefits of using text messaging and many times find myself choosing to send a text message over an email. I even love picking and choosing what types of alerts I want to receive on my mobile phone via text message.
For example, I have my mobile phone integrated with my Google calendar such that I get a text message reminder before each of my appointments. This is especially helpful when I am out and about, away from my computer.…

This morning I woke up at 6:15 am, anxious to cast my vote for the next President of the United States. Unlucky for me however, I had to wait another two and a half hours before I could actually vote.
No, the voting line wasn't two and a half hours long. It was more that I had to get my kids out of bed and ready for school and couldn't vote until my kids were safely on the bus. Then I had a short drive to my voting site and about a 30 minute wait until it was my turn to vote.
Obviously, being…
