Harvey Mover Thankful for Windows 7 or Google Chrome OS

Going into the Thanksgiving weekend I thought it was a perfect time to write an opinion piece on these two new operating systems released in the past 30 days. How do they compare and what is best for you, is still to be determined and may need further thought and consideration. Windows 7 has a new and improved Taskbar and Start Button functionality, Multiple Windows, Transitional Pop-up, and Shake Feature, better Security and overall seems to be more suited for traditional desktop users and mob… Continue

Patric Welch What does Mr. Noobie think of Windows 7?

I've followed all of the hype surrounding Microsoft's release of Windows 7. I've seen the commercials. I've read the technology trade articles. I've talked to friends who installed the beta and pre-release versions. But do you want to know something ironic? Until yesterday, I had never actually played with a computer with Windows 7 installed. Mainly because I have spent so much time helping others with their computers that I haven't taken care of my own. So I still chug away day after day with… Continue

Patric Welch Will Windows 7 finally lay Vista to rest?

Today's post is a guest post by a good friend of mine, John Uhri, and is a response to a new voting poll posted on the Noobie web site. Be sure to chime in your vote on the latest Noobie voting poll question, "What is your opinion of Windows 7?" on the Noobie web site. A poll on my opinion of Windows 7? Rock! I can't wait to vote and tell the world how much I like Windows 7. Unfortunately I was disappointed he didn't have a "I'm already a spazzed-out fanboy of Windows 7 and they aren't even se… Continue

Mike Seidle Is Antivirus Enough?

Recently one of my kids got nuked by the "Personal Antivirus" malware. It's a sneaky thing that is installed when you view the wrong (and that means a compromised site, not a bad site) website and then tries to scare you into buying a $19.95 subscription for updates. The funny part is that this thing installed itself despite Norton Security suite being up to date and running. Recently Symantec's DaContinue

Patric Welch Google just moved my soap dispenser

I love Internet applications such as Google's Gmail mainly because there is nothing to install on my computer. They usually just require an Internet connection and a browser such as Internet Explorer or FirefoxContinue

Patric Welch What if your car ran Microsoft Windows?

Imagine one day you hop in your car to drive to the grocery store to pick up a few miscellaneous items that you need to bake a batch of cookies. You haven't driven your car in 2-3 weeks because you are just coming back from a long vacation. No big deal, right? You put the key in the ignition, turn the key, put the car in drive and go about your way. Now let's pretend your car is a Windows-based computer and you've taken the same 2-3 week hiatus from using it. This time when you put the key in t… Continue

Patric Welch What if the IRS was in charge of upgrading my computer?

When I first moved to Indiana from Wisconsin shortly after my college graduation, the company that hired me and brought me to Indiana paid my moving expenses. Since I was fresh out of college this basically amounted to a U-Haul and a couple of tanks of gas.

The following April, at tax time, I had to fill out a special form to notify the government that my company had paid my moving expenses. I spent about 10-15 minutes filling out the form, carefully reading each instruction, adding an

Patric Welch I don't remember giving you permission to modify my Quick Launch toolbar

This is becoming all too common of a habit for me. Install new software or accept software update. Realize the software added an icon to my Quick Launch toolbar without asking me. Delete the Quick Launch toolbar icon. If you are not familiar with the Quick Launch toolbar, it usually resides just to the right of the Start button on Windows XP or to the right of the Windows logo button on Windows Vista. More often than not you will see tiny icons for programs such as Internet Explorer, or the "li… Continue
