A few days ago, I wrote a blog post titled I now pronounce your Facebook status "Married". In that blog post, I talked about how engrained Facebook is with the younger generations.
Soon after I wrote that blog post, something amazing happened to me. A client of mine booked a follow-up appointment with me on Facebook.
Big deal, right?
Well, it is a big deal. This particular client is 86 years old. That was not a typo. 86 years old.
And the fantastic part is that he did...…

One of the perks I get out of running Noobie is the satisfaction of knowing I really helped someone. Sometimes it's helping someone pick out the right technical gadget. Other times it's making sure someone doesn't get the wrong gadget. And then there's the times when I'm just answering a general plea for help.
I've received a lot verbal "thank-you's" and "you saved my life's" as a result of helping others but I'm not sure anyone has taken the time to actually blog about it. Until now, of course…

If you've ever wondered how much Facebook is engrained in the lives of the younger generations, wonder no more. Just watch the video
here.
Now, for those of you that aren't big Facebook followers, let me give you a brief explanation of what is happening in the video. One of the settings on your Facebook profile page is your relationship status. Choices range from "Single" to "Married" with a few other choices in-between, including the imf…

For a few months now, I have been badly in need of a new computer. Mind you, when I say I need a new computer, my existing computer is probably still in more than tolerable condition for most noobies. But I'm a techie, remember?
I need the latest and greatest. I live on the edge. I'm an early adopter.
Which is why a 3-year-old computer running Windows XP simply won't do any more.
The need for the best
I typically spend 2-3 times more on my computers than the average Joe walking into Be…

I get a lot of questions from readers and clients asking me what the difference is between a notebook and a netbook. It's one of the reasons I posted the recent article The naughty and nice of netbooks.
One of the disadvantages to netbooks, as mentioned in the article, is that many of them do not come with any kind of optical (CD or DVD) drive. While technically this is a disadvantage, it doesn't mean you can't work around it.
In fact, my good friend Andy over at the Digitante has written his…

I've followed all of the hype surrounding Microsoft's release of Windows 7. I've seen the commercials. I've read the technology trade articles. I've talked to friends who installed the beta and pre-release versions.
But do you want to know something ironic?
Until yesterday, I had never actually played with a computer with Windows 7 installed. Mainly because I have spent so much time helping others with their computers that I haven't taken care of my own. So I still chug away day after day with…

My clients often relay stories to me about how their children, or even grandchildren, have to teach them how to use their technology gadgets. I always get a chuckle when I hear these stories and wonder how long it will be before the next generation Internet will be developed by a 5-year-old.
One particular story my client told me today really tickled my fancy. She said that her son knows so much more than she does that one time she had to call her son's school and get him out of class just so h…

Today's guest post comes from my friend, Andy, over at The Digitante. I asked Andy if I could re-post this after I asked my followers on Twitter if anyone understood the new Twitter lists feature. Andy replied and told me he had just written about Twitter lists on his blog and agreed to let me re-post it for Noobie's readers. So now, without further ado... Twitter lists.
Twitter started rolling out a new feature about 2-3 weeks ago called lists. Basically, you can group together your fol…

Here's a question I received from one of my readers. I thought everyone could benefit from my reply so I'm including the full question and answer below.
Q: When I tried to open a Word document attachment, a pop up said it was created from a newer version of Microsoft Word and that I needed to install a compatibility pack.
When I clicked through to see what was involved to do that, it came up that it would be a big deal with a number of preliminary steps so I decided it wasn't worth the eff…

I was recently in Best Buy purchasing a computer for a friend. After I picked out the computer and monitor I was escorted to a special checkout line.
This special checkout line should be called the Best Buy up-sell line. When I arrived I was second in line behind an older couple. It took nearly 15 minutes for this couple to get checked out because of the 500 (yes, I am exaggerating) up-sells they had to respond to.
I debated for a second standing behind the salesman and giving a thumbs-up for…
