Email Confidentiality Notices Make You Look Stupid

Ok, I've had it. I get lots of email, and a good portion have a so-called "Confidentiality Notice". I'm no lawyer, but I do believe that freedom of speech trumps someone else's paranoia. So I did a little research and found out:
First, email confidentiality notices provide little to nothing in the way of protection and may actually may create a loophole in your non-disclosure agreements if you put them on every email you send. --

My Little Health Care Rant

I'm a little pissed off right now. Our politicians just don't get it. When it comes to healthcare, it's not real complicated. I want: Security: To be able to get medical care without fear of being bankrupted or losing their life savings. Stafety: A system that "does no harm." Freedom: The ability to make choices and select providers. Obama's plan fails to deliver any of the above. It is overly complex, has too many layers of bureaucracy and would strip control away from consumers in the long… Continue

Is Copyright + Technology Dangerous to Personal Freedom?

Today, Christian Engström had an incredibly thought provoking editorial in The Financial Times. The premise is that we are in grave danger of loosing freedom if copyright is not significantly reformed. My first thought was to dismiss the article as hyperbole, but one line really stood out
The technology could be used to create a Big Brother society beyond our nightmares, where governments and corporations monitor every detail of our lives. In the former East Germany, the gove

Is Antivirus Enough?

Recently one of my kids got nuked by the "Personal Antivirus" malware. It's a sneaky thing that is installed when you view the wrong (and that means a compromised site, not a bad site) website and then tries to scare you into buying a $19.95 subscription for updates. The funny part is that this thing installed itself despite Norton Security suite being up to date and running. Recently Symantec's DaContinue

Can we break the cycle of tax insanity?

After reading the post on Michael Moore's GM ideas it really hit me how tough it's going to be for our nation to become less wasteful and more efficient. Why? Our government is funded by taxing an ever increasing amount of waste - and if we become more efficient in any way other than producing more stuff to sell, we bankrupt some level of government:
  • Constant redevelopment creates jobs and lower and middle class income tax (the only kind that is really paid) for the federal and state g

Censoring the Discussion on Smaller Indiana

Recently, I noticed something I rarely see when I posted a follow up to a blog post on Smaller Indiana. It said something to the effect that: "Your comment will appear after the moderator approves it" Hmm, interesting. So now someone is moderating. Fine, I'll wait. Flash forward tw… Continue

Chocolate Blues Wrap

I just wanted to say thanks to all the people here on Smaller Indiana and the people from the Linking Indiana LinkedIn Group for going to yesterday's Chocolate, Blues and Business Festival. First off, I met some great people in. Over 2,300 people came, and it is absolutely breathtaking how many people I knew from profile pictures, and how many people knew me. Second, as one of the owner… Continue

Be Careful What you Tweet

Chris Flener got me thinking (Chris has a habit of being thought provoking) with a comment he made. Chris's was to the effect that people's comments, especially political ones, on sites like Smaller Indiana should not be used against them in real life. Ethics aside, reality is that everyone from your next employer to law enforcement to th

Blog Ghost Writing, Good or Bad?

Tom Deeter recently posted an article on ghost writing. His premise is that if President Obama's doesn't write his own speeches, why should you write your own blog? "There’s a bit of debate about whether or not to hire ghost writers for a business blog or, as I like to call them, “phost writers“. And while I understand the arguments against it, esContinue

Twitter Click Through Rates

Here is why Twitter is hot: it has a 4% CTR (click through rate) for just about any link you post, on just about any profile you have. How good is 4%? A good ad on Google gets 1.5-2.5%. Facebook gets .03-.11%. I did a little experiment with four different profiles, making four different kinds of posts:

Indianapolis Looses Lucious Newsom

Last night Indianapolis lost a man who has done more for the homeless, helpless and poor than anyone I've ever known. Lucious Newsom passed away at St. Francis hospital. For those of you who never met Lucious, he was a unique and powerful person who used his personal charm, musical gift and oversized heart to help the homeless and poor. His tradmark was his old-fashioned blue jeans overalls and big smile. His legacy is Anna's House - a shelter for the poor and hungry - and the many people who's… Continue
