I'm telling you this, because last Saturday night I consumed the last tobacco product that I will ever bring into my body for the rest of my life, I know that this is much easier said than done.
I began smoking at the tender age of 18. A lot of my friends were doing it. I noticed a lot of people smoking infreque… Continue

I posted this earlier today at the Tribeswell blog. Do you guys agree?
It's so important to follow the online rules of etiquette if you're going to do an effective job of promoting yourself online. The biggest problem with this is that the rules are relatively undefined and they're always morphing to adapt to new online trends.
Because of this I didn't think it would make too much sense to write a '5 tips' or '5 things not to do… Continue

My mind was wandering the other day and I got to thinking about how SICK I am of the term social media. A lot of this frustration comes out of my long-held belief that Social Media is in fact a buzzword that describes very little about itself. Here's the wikipedia definition of Buzzword. (I love this)
Not every business is a good fit for social media marketing. Some organizations just aren't set up for it. There are too many rules you have to follow, non-disclosure agreements, compliance regulations, and old-school thinkers. Let me throw out a statement that might surprise some people.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that!
Here's the issue. The walls around traditional media are slowly crumbling. We're not talking about fewer people buying newspapers. We're talking ab… Continue
To really explain how social media can positively impact your business I really need to give my definition of 'business'. Business is really just a series of relationships that facilitates the exchange of money for products or services. Using that definition, it's easier to create strategies to grow your business.
How does this apply to social media? Well the logical explanation is that if you build more, better, or closer relationships, then you will have more… Continue
Last night I was working on a promo video for Brandswag'sSMASH social media education course. I finished the first draft and discussed it with Mr. Kyle Lacy and we decided that it was definitely cool, but it lacked a little bit of focus and you couldn't tell exactly what it was about. This is what the first draft looked like. I'm calling it the artistic version.
So, w… Continue

Wordpress is an open source website and blog management tool that is extremely popular right now. This Wednesday (January 28) Confluence Networking will host an event at the Manhattan restaurant on the north side of Indianapolis. The topic will be social media and blogging. There will be a panel consisting of some of the premier experts on social media in the Indianapolis area. I've been asked to be the moderator for the panel.
Part of my job is to come up with the questions that will be asked during the session, so I thought to myself, 'Self. Why come up with the questions yourself when yo… Continue

I had an interesting experience on twitter last night that really put into perspective all the reasons I believe so strongly in the power of social media. I was just relaxing and watching a movie and I happened to have my laptop out (big surprise there) and I noticed a tweet from @scottabel. It said 'Salesforce.com wants to know what their customers think.'
