Two Sides of the Future

Society is advancing. There is no doubt that we are moving faster and faster into truly staggering changes. But with every increase in scientific or technological knowledge there is a constructive and destructive potential. We have run rather furiously at science and technology over the last 50 years and are only now starting to realize that many of the new discoveries and technologies we have espoused have really been out of control. Some of the more obvious examples of this dicotomy are nucle… Continue

Future Leadership

Rick Smyre, president of Communities of the Future, descirbes a new kind of leadership that is emerging. Rick is a former CEO and he has often shared with me how difficult it was for him to change his thinking and move away from traditional, top-down leadership approaches.

Take a look at this quote from the Communities of the Future website (leadership page) and visit the links below to get an idea of how Rick sees leaders

But I don't beleive that statement is a bash on our capabilities, it is a reflection of our long-term vision.

Surprise, Surprise

As the paper, Futuring - Part I, explains, the world is in exponential change, volatility and complexity at the same time major disciplines of thought are converging and technology is becoming mind-boggling.

In a world where people graduate from college already two years behind fast-moving knowledge advance and technology, how will we cope by continuing to rely on these traditional institutions?

Well, futuring in th

Paper: Futuring - Part I

I wrote a new paper, Futuring - Part I, that explains the reasons communities and enterprises need futuring in more detail. I think everyone knows we need 'something,' but people are having a difficult time pinning down exaclty what. Change for change's sake can be damaging or wasteful. It's much better to move into change with your eyes wide open. This paper will help you understand change that is happening almost wildly. Here it is on Scribd.… Continue

Suprising List of Advances

Here is a post from HyperAdvance covering a suprising List of Advances:

Some of the advances that are being made in a fairly quiet manner, are a bit of a mind blow when you look at them together as a list. I'll give you a small list here to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Keep in mind that these are all things that have already been done in the lab and some are in production.

What is Futuring?

In today's news, a fourteen year old boy injured dozens of people when he took over the controls of a polish railway system and was playing with live trains as if they were toys (article). Now, that's not the kind of thing you could have even imagined happening just ten years ago.
