Adjustments to 4-TouchPoints Model of Social Media

I spoke with Lorraine Ball this morning about the 4-Points model I talked about in my post, Being Productive with Social Media.

She had some excellent ideas that rounded out the model to perfection. Anymore thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

We have rounded out the four touch points to a more "proactive" arrangement: Business Interaction, Business Productivity, Social Development, and Education/Information. The picture below shows where I place my four main touchpoint sites.

We are all focusing too much on the service when there is overlap everywhere. The purpose of the model is the interaction in each realm of social media.
Facebook may be an information stream for someone.
LinkedIn may be a social tool for another.

The model shows overlap on every type of touchpoint. You could have an information/educational community driven medium and end up going to the movies with someone on here.

@Hazel: Your personal blog fits right in the middle. Usually when I write a blog it is based on information/ideas I have pulled from my social media sites.

I guess we could make the model a little more complex with secondary influencers.

I think the conversation about where each service belongs has it's merits, and you may lose people by pidgeon-holing certain services. I definitely classify mine differently.

I actually place Smaller Indiana in more of a social community with several different bents, but I feel like I've been discouraged from making it such by stronger forces, which I think is a shame. It has the capacity to be many and all, but it may wind up being just an information stream for me as other tools provide the social aspect in a much more utilitarian and socially-leveled way.

A year ago I was not active on any social network. Today I have profiles on so many it is hard to keep them straight, and just like my F2F networking I am starting to organize and categorize, picking the ones which make the most sense for me.

Amy, I am not a big FaceBook user either, so for me SmallerIndiana sits in my "Social Bucket" more than my business bucket.

I see LinkedIN, Plaxo, OneDegree as tools to make introductions faster and more efficiently then trying to arrange a face to face, but I don't use any of those for extended conversations.

My Business Interactions: Still working on these. I think MyWomanOwnedBusiness has potential if more women get involved.

FriendFeed is awesome. I have only been on for a week, but I am definitely hooked!

Interesting, to me, Smaller indiana is more education/information, and likedin is business interaction. But I am not sure that I really grasp what you mean as "Business Productivity" and how does Blogging fit in to social media?

The beautiful thing about the concept is the fact that all four have ties into the "idea generating process."
Amy Stark Comment by Amy Stark on July 12, 2008 at 2:29pm
I never jumped into Plaxo, I turned down several invitations. I really only actively participate in TED and Smaller Indiana and all things Google, so my personal filter is necessarily tainted by the concept of an "idea" spreading to affect change.

I have to be very selective in my choice of social media sites to follow because I must follow the KISS rule in my social media participation (Keep it simple, stupid!) because I am ignorant about so many things. I sometimes struggle with Mark Twain's advice that, "It's better to remain silent and appear ignorant, than open your mouth and remove all doubt."

The four points concept is wonderful and I love the graphics. If the word "idea" was in there somewhere, it would make it more complete for me personally.

Everything begins with an idea! And Ideas that spread win.. according to history and Seth Godin.

Collaboration is huge, too, you are so right about that. It is a meme unto itself right now, ala Clay Shirky. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/clay_shirky_on_institutions_versus_collaboration.html

Everyone is going to have a different reaction to the graph. Maybe your business interaction is more of a Plaxo environment and your information/education is smallerindiana. You can change it up anyway you like.

Smaller Indiana is more of a business idea incubator, idea generation tool, collaborator, and networking tool for myself. This is the reason why I listed it under business interaction.

Interaction can be information/idea sharing as well as business networking.

I do not participate in friendfeed, but will investigate. I do not actively participate on face book or myspace so I don't know enough to comment on them specifically. But I think the title for Smaller Indiana should be "Idea Interaction" rather than business, (in my humble opinion).

Linked IN for me is all about business and Smaller Indiana is about the exchange of ideas.

It will be wonderful if business grows from this exchange of ideas, but I have profited greatly from the information. I may never make money from my participation in Smaller Indiana, but I can say unequivocally my life has been enhanced by the depth of knowledge found in the creative Smaller Indiana genius pool.
