Indianapolis Air Show: BEWARE OF (having a) BLAST

(photo credit Flickr user icahla / Jessica Major)
It's been more than 100 years since Millville, Ind. native Wilbur Wright and his brother Orville flew their heavier-than-air flying machine. We've come a long way from the days in Kittyhawk where their canvass-wrapped contraption flew 120 feet.

In my opinion, the best place to view this 100-year leap forward is in Indy, this weekend at the Indianapolis Air Show. I'll be taking my sons Charlie, 9, and Robbie, 5, to see the airplanes and we will have a blast!

Pretty much our Saturday or Sunday will be spent in awe of big shiny object doing loops and spewing smoke hundreds of feet above the ground. Even though mankind has been flying for 100 years, it's hard for me not to stop for a minute and be impressed at how difficult nailing a routine landing must be. After all, the Wright Brother's plane still looks pretty freakin' big over your head at the Smithsonian. I can only imagine how freakin' awesome the F-22 Raptor will be burrowing through the sky at MACH whatever.

I, quite frankly, understand the world in graphic, emotional and expressive ways and not so much through the mathematical and engineering formulas that rule it. But that's OK. My sons and I will go see the air show this weekend, and the most intelligent thing I will say is "ooh!" and "aah!"

I don't know who will have more fun -- you or the boys. But good memories to be made for sure.

Great to see you there! We'll be going with my family on Sunday afternoon. Can't wait to see the F-22 Raptor as well. I'm hoping they have it parked for pictures prior to everything and it doesn't just do a fly-by.
