Pinterest has been named the best new start-up in 2011 and is driving more referral traffic than LinkedIn, YouTube and Google+. It reportedly has 11.7 million unique users, making it the fastest site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark!
So, what is this Pinterest? Well, it’s a social media platform focusing on the lifestyles of its members and encouraging them to create different virtual pinboards that they then “’pin’ things they like. What does that mean for you as a business owner? Well, let’s look at the demographics – 80-92% depending on the study you look at are women and 55% of these are aged between 25-44. Are you targeting this demographic? Well, then it’s a no-brainer to me.
But don’t start selling – it’s just like other social media sites. The platform is not about self-promotion but an online space for members to share their lifestyles, tastes and interests. Tell a story about your brand through the pictures. Let people see what you are interested in. And, of course, connect with others who have similar interests. Don’t push product, but show the lifestyle that is associated with your brand.

Would love to see an update once you have more info/research to share Serina! I think Pinterest could be a fabulous social media platform, but truly don't know what they should do so the users are legally protected.
Comment by Serina Kelly on February 29, 2012 at 7:27pm Great point, Charlene! I was just chatting with someone about this recently as one of my clients is an intellectual property attorney, and I am curious how this will play out in that realm.
Thanks for the great comment and link!
As a marketer, Pinterest sounds good. Until I look deeper. I'm staying away because of their terms of use that states you, the 'pinner' are declaring that the work you are 'pinning' is yours and that if it's not you will be liable for any copyright issues. I read this article and it only deepened my resolve to think long and hard before participating on this platform: http://ddkportraits.com/2012/02/why-i-tearfully-deleted-my-pinteres...
