Smaller Indiana Groups - A Reflection of Our Energy?

Hi everyone. I did an unofficial poll of the size of groups on Smaller Indiana. The top twelve groups I found look like this (my apologies if I missed any):

1 - Business Owners 230 members
2 - 2012 Super Bowl City 207 members
3 - Rainmakers Marketing Group 187 members
4 - Creative Commerce - 181 members
5 - Advocates for Indiana Nonprofits/Community Benefit Organizations (A-IN) 159 members
6 - Smaller Food Indiana 153 members
7 - Greener Indiana 147 members
8 - Web Development in Indiana 144 members
9 - Blog-IN 115 members
10 - Writers Group 101 members
11 - Indy Hub 96 members (Young professionals)
12 - IT Professionals 93 members

My question is..."Is this a reflection of where hoosiers are investing their time, resources, and energy for the future of Indiana?"

It's definitely not scientific, but if we place these ten into more general themes, small business and content rise to the top. It might look something like this:

1 - Business owners, creative commerce, and business networking - 591 members
2 - Electronic and traditional content creation - 360 members
3 - Sports - 207 members
4 - Not-for-profit - 159 members
5 - Food - 153 members
6 - Green - 147 members
7 - Young professionals - 96 members
8 - Information Technology - 93 members

Are these our strengths? Is this what we are developing as a state? Should we capitalize on these as strengths or try to abandon them as weaknesses and shift focus somewhere else? If we did need to shift focus, do we have the capabilites to do so? The interest and energy to do so?

When we consider the future of our state: Do we have a unified direction? Do we know where we are going? Or are we engaged in a kind of unconscious movement? Are we reactive or proactive? Do we need a unified vision and direction? If so, who should be leading us into this vision and who owns it?

Just some things to think about concerning the future of our state.

Great thoughts everyone. I updated the categories I missed (thanks Andrew). Definitely not trying to be scientific here, but if it were, I think the top two categories above reflect a lot of young, highly creative entrepreneurs that are Internet savvy within SI. I mainly want to stimulate some thinking about the benefits of visualizing the current and future state of Indiana as a whole.

Association doesn't mean activity or energy for sure. Ever seen a church membership list? :-)

You did miss a couple of groups -Creative Commerce @ 181 and Smaller Food @ 152 (which would be #'s 4 & 5 on the list).

I think the groups reflect the purpose/mission statement of Smaller Indiana which is on the main page: Smaller Indiana makes creative people and innovative ideas easier to find. This is the place for you to share your ideas and engage with Indiana's most creative and inspired souls...working together to build community, culture and commerce.

I would think that this filters out some people or groups and encourages others to join. If the statement said it was a social network for business contacts, I might not have joined. On the other hand there may be people who saw that and didn' feel they are in the creative "class" and didn't join. And I would think that there are some non-joiners who would be great members and contributors. Should this lead to a discussion on how to make the statement more inclusive? I don't have an opinion but just raise the question. As we evolve we should be evaluating where we are and if it is where we want to be.

Not sure if these group reflect our particular strengths or weaknesses, but it's a good question. Clearly we have the makings of a movement here.

In addition to the "head" we might also look at the "long tail" of groups and appreciate the wide spectrum of interests we hold in our community.
