Making people and ideas findable

Now, while my Home Alone quote may have little-to-nothing to do with my post, it is what made me want to write this. I was browsing Facebook the other day, and saw one of those bumper stickers with this written on it, and it really brought me back to oh, 1990. But there was a picture of a dog on it as well, which made me miss my gals!

Dixie (left) and Sophie are my two rescue pugs- with Dixie being the impostor "bugg," a Boston Terrier-Pug mix. I never in a million years thought that I'd "rescue" a dog. A month before I graduated high school, we got a little baby boy pug named Oliver. My parents were going through an "interesting" time- mom bought a Mini Cooper, dad bought a Mini Puppy. (We toyed with the idea of naming him Cooper, but we nixed it since we did all want to eat in the near future.) Unfortunately, the only one of these two that remains five years later is the Coop. Oli died in September 2007 from a liver infection while I was in upstate New York on a business trip.
Of course this drove me into pug-mode and I started becoming even more involved with Kentuckiana Pug Rescue here in Indy. Knowing he lived a happy life gave me comfort, but knowing that there are so many pugs (and other dogs) out there who do not get that warm "I am loved" feeling at least once made me feel sick to my stomach. KPR takes in many, many pugs through foster homes. They spay or neuter the pugs, and make sure they are medically cleared prior to an adoption. We fostered our two puggies with the intent of adopting them- we weren't allowed to adopt the girls until they had a clean bill of health! While we did pay an adoption fee, they are very reasonable for what you get- a healthy pug!

Being involved with pug rescue had made me realize two things. 1- that pugs (to me- maybe another dog to you) are more than a pet, they're family, and 2- puppy mills are bad news! My two little showgirls were dropped off at a shelter after serving their puppy mill for many years. Dixie runs in circles when she's anxious, and Sophie sometimes gets neurotic if she's even remotely feeling cornered. At least now they know love- they lounge and lick each other and get to watch Animal Planet all day in their own room (sad, I know.) I just can't imagine my life without them, and hate to think how many other pugs are without love from a forever home.

Visit www.kentuckianapugs.com to learn more about KPR and to see their adoptable pugs- they're cuties!

Anyone out there a pug fan? (HOPE SO!) What about other dog-lovers- are there any other rescue doggies that belong to Smoosiers? Or are any Smoosiers involved in rescue? I'd love to hear your stories- and maybe have a puppy playdate!

Oh my! So great to hear your story Kelly! We have two rescue pugs (Hamlet and Monza) and a rescue Italian Greyhound (Bellachino) My wife rescued Hamlet several years ago and I fell in love with her. We rescured Monza, our black pug right around Christmas. My wife Amber looks at the kentuckianapug site ALL the time and wants to adopt them all. Did you attend the event a couple weeks ago in Lebanon? It was a lot of fun.

HAHA! What a coincidence! Yes we were there! :) It was great fun. You should check out the pugs' blog at http://pugandbugg.blogspot.com. They wrote ALLLL about it (yea- I take it that far!) My boyfriend and I are thinking about doing some fostering- yikes! Not sure if I'll be able to handle it, but we'll see. The girls also have Italian Greyhound boyfriends that live down the block- one has a missing leg from two leg breaks when he was racing. They are rescued too. Do you go to the pug meetups in Indy at all?? Click the meetup link in my profile for more info if you'd like!

That is too funny. Yes, my wife wants to do some fostering too...not sure we can handle that. I would think it would be too hard to give them up. We have not been to pug club in a while. We moved away for a while and moved back to Indy. We need to get back to attending the events. Amber is reading your blog right now. She is reading about your experiences with Pixie. We read about her story as well, and was great to see her doing well at the event. We will have to hang out with all our pugs sometime.

Absolutely! We're always looking for new puggie/human friends! We are (VERY SADLY) not going to be at the meetup for May, but we'll be at June. If you're ever going to take them to the Bark Park in BR though let us know, cause we live down the street!

Sounds good Kelly. Look forward to getting together sometime. Love the Bark Park!! Have a good one and see you soon.
